Organizational Overview
Scientists in Brookhaven's Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science Division (CMPMSD) study basic, theoretical and applied aspects of materials, their utilization, and their electronic, physical, mechanical, and chemical properties in relation to their structure.
Position Description
The Oxide Molecular Beam Epitaxy Group is primarily engaged in synthesis of thin films of cuprate superconductors and other complex oxides by means of molecular beam epitaxy, and their characterization by a suite of experimental techniques.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Running, maintaining, and upgrading an advanced oxide molecular beam epitaxy system.
  • Design, construction and commissioning of the additional system components and infrastructure.
  • Synthesis and characterization of thin films of cuprate superconductors and other complex oxides by XRD, AFM, transport and magnetic measurements.
  • Collecting and analyzing the data, formulating the conclusions, communicating the results in research publications and presentations such as seminars, colloquia, and conference talks.

Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Bachelors degree or higher level degree in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Sciences, or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-degree research experience (as postdoc, research assistant, scientist, or other equivalent work)
  • Demonstrated record of publications in leading research journals
  • Extensive hands-on experience in designing, building, maintaining and operating oxide molecular beam epitaxy systems.
  • Extensive experience with atomic-beam rate measurements, surface-science tools such as RHEED, and sophisticate laboratory electronics.
  • Extensive experience in MBE synthesis and characterization of thin films of cuprate superconductors, including cryogenic transport measurements, mutual inductance measurements, X-ray diffraction and Atomic force microscopy.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
  • Masters or PhD in Condensed Matter Physics or related field
  • High pressure annealing
  • Electrolyte gating
  • SolidWorks design
  • UV lithography
  • Atomic layer deposition
  • Atomic layer etching
