Director for Fraternity and Sorority Advising

Department Statement:
Fraternity and Sorority Advising at Colgate seeks to enhance the student experience, mold thoughtful and engaged adults, and provide lifelong affinity to the institution and connection with classmates. Our goals include intellectual development; citizenship, leadership, and service; diversity, access, and inclusion; personal growth, health, and wellness; accountability; and lifelong connections.

Accountabilities:
With five recognized fraternities and three sororities, and approximately one third of eligible students affiliated with the community, the director is accountable for effective management of an important and venerable part of Colgate's out-of- class living and learning experience. The director will ensure the efficacy of all programs, support services, policies, and education related to fraternities and sororities on campus in support of established learning outcomes.

Strategic Leadership for Fraternity and Sorority Advising
  • Provide leadership, direction, support, and oversight of the operations within Fraternity and Sorority Advising.
  • Provide strategic direction towards the assessment of current practices and implement a plan to improve the overall effectiveness of the involvement and advisement model.
  • Develop knowledge of current trends and best practices as it relates to risk management, alcohol and other drugs, and hazing.
  • Institute strategic measures to ensure financial responsibility is accomplished among the chapters.


Advising and Leadership Development
  • Support and advise the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and the National Panhellenic Council (NPC). Provide community support through individual council officer meetings and attendance at weekly IFC and CPH meetings.
  • Provide organizational officers in fraternities and sororities with leadership and direction to effectively execute their leadership responsibilities and organizational endeavors consistent with university and national guidelines.
  • Develop, in cooperation with governing councils, the implementation and coordination of an annual accreditation program for recognized chapters.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum and training related to risk management and harm reduction.
  • Assist with advising other student organizations as needed.

Recruitment and New Member Education
  • Provide oversight and coordination of intake/ recruitment processes consistent with institutional and national organizational guidelines.
  • Coordinate and provide oversight for new member education plans and programs, including ensuring compliance with effective risk management programs.
  • Advise fraternity and sorority chapters on inclusive practices related to new member recruitment and development, including partnering with the ALANA Cultural Center staff to offer robust cultural competency training opportunities for affiliated members and to create a recruitment strategy to ensure the membership is reflective of Colgate's student demographic.

Internal and External Partnerships
  • Act as the main point of contact for inter/national headquarters.
  • Collaborate with other administrators in the dean of the college division to coordinate leadership development opportunities and community outreach/philanthropic efforts that are aligned with chapter values, and department, divisional and institutional priorities.
  • Work collaboratively with residential life staff and house managers, to maintain housing and university operations.
  • Support the Office of Student Involvement and Dean of the College division by participating in annual large-scale programs such as Orientation, Welcome Week, Homecoming Weekend, Springfest, and Reunion Weekend. Fulfill other duties as assigned.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and national councils on issues related to fraternities and sororities.
  • Establish productive relationships with chapter alumni and alumnae, national organizations, and faculty advisers.
  • Collaborate with other campus departments by serving on university committees and/or by partnering on co-curricular programs that support community-building, wellness, and student success.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Prepare reports and provide research as assigned.
  • Participate in department-wide planning of programs and initiatives and collaborate with others to ensure high-quality events and services to students.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of students.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), in accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students and employees to the Campus Safety Department.

Professional Experience/Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of on-campus Greek life and/or Panhellenic and IFC standards;
  • Experience working as an effective collaborator and independently;
  • Experience with budgets and managing finances or accounts;
  • Experience planning large and small events in a college/university setting;
  • Experience advising student clubs and organizations;
  • Attention to detail, including an ability to assess and identify risks;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; and
  • Availability to work evenings, late nights, and occasional weekends as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional experience in fraternity and sorority affairs, or related areas;
  • Experience supervising student staff;
  • Experience leading or working on a cross-functional, collaborative team;
  • Demonstrated capacity to work collegially with members of a diverse campus community (e.g. alumni, faculty, staff, and students) on a daily basis;
  • Prior student leadership role and/or experience developing student leaders, student organizations, and adviser training and resources;
  • Knowledge of student development theory, student and student organization advising models, and curriculum design; and
  • Experience with student learning outcomes, assessment, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of facilities management;


Education
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required.
  • A Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, or other relevant discipline is preferred.

Work Schedule:
Generally, this position will work M-F during standard business hours. Also requires weekend and evening work and flexibility around scheduling.
