Job Description:

The School of Art & Design seeks a passionate and dedicated painter and educator with recognized professional achievement including an exhibition record and strong knowledge of teaching painting and drawing at the college level. An MFA or equivalent terminal degree in the field is required. The ideal candidate will excel in the instruction of painting and drawing from the foundation to advanced levels of undergraduate study in the BFA program. Curriculum development is an expected part of this position and we also welcome candidates who would like to serve in leadership roles such as department chair and assistant chair on a rotating basis.

The candidate's work and teaching experience must reflect the ability to leverage a strong foundation in traditional artistic skills and practice as a platform for innovation. We are open to hybrid forms of creative and interdisciplinary inquiry that will connect to other units in the Fine Arts Department and the college at large. The successful candidate must possess the ability to share extensive knowledge of art history, as well as current practices, approaches, and movements in contemporary art. Specialization in a cross-cultural approach to curriculum development is encouraged.

We seek a team-oriented faculty member who is willing to play an active role within the Fine Arts Department in terms of curriculum development, facility management, administrative responsibilities, and student mentorship. The ideal candidate should pursue community-building activities such as curation, conferences or symposia, and leadership in professional organizations. Candidates should be practicing artists with at least three years of experience in teaching painting and drawing at both foundation and upper-division levels. MFA or equivalent terminal degree in the field is required. Instructional Design
  • Demonstrate the ability to educate students in both figurative and non-objective modalities within an integrated Fine Arts program.
  • Serve as an active contributor to curricular assessment and development.
  • Demonstrate commitment to student-centeredness with active participation in student work reviews, and the ability to offer productive verbal feedback, assessment, and counseling.

Learning Enrichment
  • Demonstrate a passion for teaching, and the ability to inspire interest, curiosity, and creativity in students.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize a variety of instructional delivery systems, including various media sources that foster critical thinking and problem solving in students.
  • Enrich the learning experience by creating opportunities for students to engage with professional artists, New York's museums and galleries, and the broader art world.
  • Incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to teaching in the Fine Arts learning environment.
  • Contribute to the ongoing success of students through advisement and mentorship of student clubs and activities.
  • Teach professional development and facilitate student engagement with the artistic community within and beyond FIT.

Professionalism
  • Demonstrate, as a committed artist, the pursuit of creative work with an active studio practice and exhibition record.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach a breadth of 2D processes to all levels of undergraduate students.
  • Demonstrate collaboration and engagement in contributing to and performing administrative and committee service for the department, the School, and the College.

Technology
  • Demonstrate expertise with specific technology and software relevant to Fine Arts.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with FIT's safety officer as well as the department chair in areas of health and safety, encouraging safe and sustainable practices related to the sculpture studio.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • MFA or equivalent terminal degree in the field is required.
  • Three years of previous teaching experience in painting and drawing at the college level.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

This position will be required to constantly read and comprehend, occasionally perform calculations, constantly verbally communicate, frequently analyze, and constantly write. The working conditions for this position will be any combination of the classroom, lab, and/or office space. Certain roles may be required to handle machinery and chemicals. The physical requirement for this position will require occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional bending, frequent walking, and occasionally lifting 10 lbs. or less.
