Job Description
Gilead Sciences (Foster City, CA) is seeking a talented and highly motivated Sr Associate Scientist to join our inflammation group. Our collaborative and interdisciplinary research team utilizes state-of-the-art technologies and innovative methodologies to advance medicines into the clinic. The successful candidate is expected to be lab-based and to contribute to the discovery, research, and development of novel immunotherapeutic agents to address unmet medical needs of inflammatory diseases including inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis. He/she will support projects across discovery research and into early development on multidisciplinary project teams. The successful candidate will participate as an engaged member of a collaborative department with diverse research interests. He/she will also independently design and execute experiments to advance our understanding of disease biology. He/she will have opportunities for career growth through acquisition of new skills, experiences, and professional relationships in a fast-paced and resource-rich environment.

Essential Functions:

-Conduct lab-based benchwork to support the initiation and/or advancement of drug candidates and new technologies.

-Independently design, conduct, and analyze in vitro cell-based experiments; tissue processing and analysis of preclinical models

-Support development of new technologies and assays to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms.

-Contribute to the preparation of research reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, INDs, and patent filings.

-Work cross-functionally with colleagues in the inflammation biology, protein engineering, chemistry, biomarker, and bioinformatics groups.

-Demonstrate critical and creative thinking and strong organizational skills. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are required.

Qualifications and requirements:

-BA and 8+ years or MS and 5+ years of relevant post-graduate research experience or drug development experience in immunology/autoimmune diseases

-Strong background and hands-on experience in human immunology, inflammatory diseases, or immune modulation strategies preferred.

-Demonstrates proficiency and drive to perform wet lab immunology techniques, including development and implementation of in-vitro cell based functional assays, transfection / transduction of primary cells and cell lines, multi-color flow cytometry, ELISA, Luminex/MSD assays, and other immunoassays.

-Prior work experience in immunomodulatory biologics, myeloid cell immunology, and preclinical mouse models of autoimmunity (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and IBD) are preferred.
