Job Description:

SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY, a Jesuit, Catholic university located in the Silicon Valley area of California, seeks candidates to fill the position of Assistant Professor, a tenure-track faculty position in African American art, secondary expertise in the arts of Africa or the greater African Diaspora desirable. The Department of Art and Art History has a commitment to recruit faculty from under-represented groups, contributing to our continuation to meet our diversity and inclusion goals and actions, both in the classroom and in the larger Department community. Courses to be taught include a two-quarter Culture and Ideas 1 & 2 sequence, possibly one course for Culture and Ideas 3, an introductory course in African American, African diaspora, or African art, and upper division courses in the candidate's area of specialty. Cultures and Ideas courses will be broadly grounded in the applicant's specialty with a strong interdisciplinary approach to the field; see http://www.scu.edu/provost/ugst/core2009/faculty.cfm for more information. Ability to teach African American art as part of a broader global perspective is thus highly desirable. Ph.D. required by time of appointment, as well as publications and teaching experience beyond the level of teaching assistant. The Department of Art and Art History is situated in a recently-built facility, equipped with custom designed art history classrooms. The department offers majors and minors in Art History as part of well-rounded liberal arts education. We are seeking teaching scholars who will develop and present their scholarship at a national and international level while maintaining a successful learning environment for students.

This position is part of a cluster hire in Race, Inequality, and Social Justice . The six participating departments are Art and Art History, English, Political Science, Psychology, Public Health, and Religious Studies. The 2022 cohort includes faculty in Anthropology, Child Studies, Classics, Communication, History, and Religious Studies. The purpose of the cluster hire is to recruit talented, accomplished, diverse faculty members who will advance knowledge and understanding in this area through their scholarship and teaching. Once hired, the faculty in the cluster will meet regularly as a cohort to network with a variety of colleagues in the College and University involved in scholarship and teaching related to the theme of the cluster.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in African American Art (art history or similar area of study) and a minimum of one year (full time or equivalent) of teaching art history at the college level are required at time of appointment. Candidate must demonstrate a record of, or demonstrate outstanding potential for exceptional teaching, scholarship, and professional achievements. Ability to teach and work effectively in a liberal arts institution, in a joint Art and Art History department that serves many non-art history majors, required. Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to provide valuable service to the department and greater institution required, as commensurate with position.

Position begins September 2023. Duties will include but are not limited to: developing and teaching courses in the area of specialization, the Department, and University Core Curriculum, conducting appropriate research and scholarly publishing, advising/mentoring undergraduate students, and performing departmental and university service as appropriate to rank and seniority. Normal course load is 7 courses, with an annual one-course reduction for active scholarship. SCU offers one course reduction in the first quarter, and a junior faculty development leave (fourth year) upon successful completion of the mid-probationary review.

Responsibilities:

Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research and service. This is an in-person position. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to:

TEACHING

1. Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the chair, including a two-quarter Culture and Ideas 1 & 2 sequence, possibly one course for Culture and Ideas 3, an introductory course in African American, African diaspora, or African art, and upper division courses in the candidate's area of specialty. SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

a. Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.

b. Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.

c. Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.

d. Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.

e. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.

2. Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core. Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.

3. Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.

4. Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.

5 Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Department of Art and Art History.

RESEARCH:

1. Develop a research program at SCU that will result in the publication of peer-reviewed publications, monographs, and/or creative work per the department scholarship standards.

2. The college values research which can accommodate undergraduates.

SERVICE:

1. Provide effective service to the Department of Art and Art History, the College, the University and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.
