Publishing Manager, Open Science

Position Summary:
The American Physical Society (APS) publishes the trusted, renowned, and growing Physical Review family of peer-reviewed journals, covering physics and physics-related research and including world-leading, premier titles such as Physical Review Letters, Reviews of Modern Physics, and Physical Review X, as well as the essential and trusted core Physical Review titles. Location based in the UK or EU is preferred.

The Publishing Manger, Open Science (PMOS) reports to the Director of Publishing and is responsible for:
  • Understanding, and tracking developments within, the open science/open access landscape
  • Developing fruitful relationships with a network of stakeholders across the open science/open access landscape
  • Using data and knowledge to inform the development of APS products and services
  • Supporting development of transformative agreement proposals and negotiations
  • Directing analysis and modeling of global and local open access publications data
  • Acting as a proxy for external and internal customers in product owner roles on project and product teams


As a "know-how manager" this role is focused on shaping work by effectively collaborating and sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues in a number departments and functional areas. Close and effective working relationships across APS functions and levels will be critical to success.

The PMOS role is remote-first, working primarily from home, and is required to travel to relevant events and stakeholder sites, as well as occasionally to APS offices and other offsite locations for periodic meetings, training, and strategy sessions.

Location based in the UK or EU is preferred.

Education: Bachelors or graduate degree, preferably with a focus relevant to the defined responsibilities of the role.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors or graduate degree, preferably with a focus relevant to the defined responsibilities of the role
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience with scholarly publications and products, preferably in the physical sciences or other areas of STEM
  • Extensive knowledge of scholarly communication, academic library markets, open science/open access trends in research communities, and other forces currently shaping the journals publishing industry
  • A deep appreciation for high-quality, society-owned journals and their value to the scholarly record and scientific enterprise.
  • A combination of experiences including some or all of the following is desirable: editorial processes; publishing policies and workflows; product development; project management/leadership; sales, marketing, business development, and/or other commercial experience.

Travel: The position requires significant travel to conduct site visits and to attend meetings and events as part of its core responsibilities, as well as additional travel as assigned.
