Job Description

The Associate Director of Health Research will be responsible for overseeing, managing, and growing ASU's rapidly evolving health and clinical research portfolio. The Associate Director of Health Research will be directly supervised by the Director of VPR Strategy within the Office of the Vice President of Research (OVPR) at ASU Knowledge Enterprise (KE), and will work directly with relevant Deans, Directors, and senior leaders across all ASU enterprises. In this role, the Associate Director of Health Research will have a unique opportunity to become familiar with "all things health" at ASU (e.g., 40+ health-related colleges, institutes, centers, and offices), and serve as the single point of contact for health research for internal and external stakeholders (e.g., clinicians and leadership at hospitals, state and county health departments, and non-profits). Situated within the OVPR, the Associate Director of Health Research will be empowered to work closely with key stakeholders in health across ASU to support existing efforts and shape the future of health and clinical research at ASU and in the Phoenix Metro Area.

Specifically, the Associate Director of Health Research will be responsible for developing a system to track, measure, and evaluate health and clinical research across ASU; communicating strategic plans for health research to key stakeholders across all ASU enterprises; working with Deans and Directors to create coordination and cohesion in health research activities across ASU; growing research activities and expenditures in strategic areas of interest; managing, growing, and supporting cross-sector partnerships (e.g., with payers, providers, health departments, medical schools, health information exchanges, tech companies, etc.); serving on and coordinating internal boards, councils, and working groups; representing ASU on external health-related boards and councils; showcasing ASU's overall impact in health to internal and external audiences; managing relationships with clinical partners and working with Corporate Engagement and Strategic Partnerships (CESP) to support the advancement of other partnerships; and working with ASU Foundations to diversify funding for health and clinical research, including going after and winning large "moonshot" opportunities in health.

Essential Duties

Assists the Director, VPR Research Strategy and Vice President of Research in overseeing, managing, and growing ASU's health and clinical research portfolio. By working closely with the Director, VPR Strategy and the Vice President of Research, the Associate Director of Health Research will actualize strategic plans for health research to purposefully grow research expenditures. Specifically, the Associate Director of Health Research will be responsible for the following:

Executing strategic plans for research at ASU in the health space by coordinating logistics, communicating effectively, analyzing data, and assessing progress across enterprises and academic units
Tracking, measuring, evaluating, and growing health research at ASU (including but not limited to research expenditures)
Showcasing ASU's impact in health to internal and external audiences; advancing strategic goals for health research at ASU set by the President, Executive Vice President of ASU's Knowledge Enterprise (KE), and Vice President of Research
Managing key clinical partnerships and working closely with the Office of Corporate Engagement and Strategic Partnerships in KE to support the management of others
Overseeing and serving on several internal councils and working groups to ensure coordination and cohesion of efforts across ASU and advance progress towards goals
Supporting Deans, Directors, researchers, and faculty
Working with ASU Foundations to diversify funding for health and clinical research, including going after and winning large "moonshot" opportunities in health
Advising the VPR on executive decision making.

Additionally, the Associate Director of Health Research will:

Oversee the identification and prioritization of appropriate funding opportunities
Develop teams to respond to targeted research initiatives, including proposal management
Consult with team members to identify strengths, challenges, and prospective options with the goal of submitting the most competitive proposals.
May supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff.

Examples of activities the Associate Director of Health Research may lead:

Collaborate with local health departments and community stakeholders on statewide pandemic recovery and resiliency efforts
Pursue and win large multi-million-dollar grant opportunities in partnership with local hospitals and tech companies
Set up smooth pathways for researchers to obtain biospecimens from clinical partners
Work with hospital leadership across AZ to accelerate joint research in areas of overlapping interest (e.g., maternal and child health)
Develop a model for engaging citizen scientists at ASU to bring research into communities and diversify clinical research.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Desired Qualifications

Master's Degree or Ph.D. in a health-related field
Experience working in higher education.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions. Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.
