Argonne National Laboratory is currently inviting applications for the position of Deputy Laboratory Director (DLD) for Science and Technology.

As the laboratorys lead research voice, the Deputy Laboratory Director (DLD) for Science and Technology will serve as an integral member of the senior executive team at Argonne National Laboratory, reporting to, and assisting, the Laboratory Director, in partnership with the Associate Laboratory Directors (ALD), in establishing emerging science directions and implementing a collective, laboratory-wide science strategy. As a key advisor to the Laboratory Director in overall laboratory strategy, they will help communicate this strategic vision at the enterprise and programmatic levels.

They will advise on scientific and technical quality across the organization and ensure alignment and integration with strategic priorities, core capabilities and major initiatives. The DLD is Argonnes Chief Research Officer and is a member of the National Laboratory Directors Chief Research Officers Council. In this capacity, they will require the ability to move a diverse set of research programs and facilities forward to higher levels of prominence and strategic focus, creating and implementing distinctive programs that advance Argonnes directorates and divisions individually while promoting collaborative research, creating a more dynamic and coherent ecosystem in which to operate. They will provide critical insight and influence in the development of the Annual Laboratory Plan, establish and expand efforts and governance in key R&D integrity programs, advise on the management of the lab-directed research and development (LDRD) programs, and ensure the LDRD programs align with overall laboratory strategy.

In addition to working with the ALDs in investment and supporting strategies to achieve research goals, the Deputy Laboratory Director will support key programmatic capture opportunities and be a primary contributor in developing external strategic partnerships with the Department of Energy (DOE) and other federal sponsors, academia, industry and across the DOE laboratory complex that enable ground-breaking research. They will lead, convene and participate in multi-stakeholder activities to promote Argonnes research agenda, its portfolio, and the findings of Argonne research programs, and to prioritize new research ideas. As a trusted advisor, they will also represent the Laboratory Director on research program matters, both internally and externally. They will also serve on the Executive DEI Council and act as a champion for the wide range of laboratory diversity-focused fellowship and strategic hire programs and employee resource groups.

Position Requirements
  • Knowledge and demonstrated professional expertise in one or more of the basic or applied sciences with a broad level of knowledge and innovative curiosity in several others.
  • Experience and successful track record in science strategy development in partnership with science programs.
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to analyze and formulate solutions to complex problems in science and technology.
  • Business acumen and the ability to identify research opportunities and build collaborative partnerships.
  • Ability to build, expand and deepen strong relationships with a diverse and intricate network of stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of, and skills in, management practices and principles including enterprise risk management.
  • Executive level presentation and written communications skills.
  • Skills in establishing effective interpersonal relationships, and in motivating multidisciplinary scientific and technical staff.
  • Knowledge of national scientific and technical priorities, policies and opportunities.
  • Ability to model Argonnes core values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q-level clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).

This level of knowledge and skill is typically achieved through advanced formal education through the doctorate level, extensive research experience in a specialized field, scientific credibility as evidenced with a reputation of distinction, and extensive experience in the management of scientific programs.
