Our team is seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer/Scientist to help us in the characterization and invention of new materials. As a member of our team, you will apply your strong background in engineering, laboratory testing, and data analysis to generate impactful solutions to our country's most important challenges. By joining our team of subject-matter-experts in thermal analysis, experimental mechanics, and microanalysis you will have the opportunity to uncover structure property relationships in cutting edge polymers, to determine the performance of coatings for extreme environments, and to characterize thermal phase change behavior in additively manufactured metal alloys using our suite of thermal analysis instruments, and more. You will innovate in a hands-on, applied laboratory setting by utilizing our state-of-the art characterization facility to expedite APL's technology development cycle and contribute to laboratory wide initiatives.

As a Polymer Materials Engineer/Scientist...

Your primary responsibility will be experimentation in the materials laboratory. You will utilize a suite a thermal and mechanical analysis tools and collaborate with project principal investigators.
You will develop streamlined methods for materials characterization to develop and understanding of performance of cutting edge materials in austere environments.
You will have opportunity to pursue your own scientific interests and grow your influence and career as an engineer/scientist.
You will design and execute independent R&D on materials and testing methods to further develop capabilities at the Applied Physics Lab.

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

Possess a BS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
Have at least 2 years of laboratory experience operating thermal analysis instrumentation including DMA, DSC, and TGA.
Have a strong technical background in polymer science.
Are comfortable working in a laboratory environment and demonstrate safe work practices.
Are able to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
