Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Art History

Job No: 497178
Position Type: full-time
Location: Lewisburg, PA
Categories: Art & Art History

Bucknell University's Department of Art & Art History invites applications for a tenure-track position in Art History beginning in August 2023. We seek an individual trained in the art of the medieval or early modern period whose scholarship addresses intersections between art and science. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. in Art History by the start of the appointment. The position is a 3/2 teaching load and courses to be taught by the candidate include one of the two surveys of World Art (ARTH 101, ARTH 102), advanced courses in the candidate's field of specialization as well as interdisciplinary, general education courses that serve the university's core curriculum.

The successful teacher-scholar will reinforce the strengths of a department committed to diversity, equity, and global awareness, while making interdisciplinary connections across the university with dynamic pedagogies and research initiatives. There is ample opportunity and enthusiasm for the candidate to develop their own course content, to contribute to the ongoing development of the Art History curriculum, and to offer a first-year seminar in their specialty as part of our department's ongoing contribution to the university's core curriculum. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, the successful candidate will display the potential for developing a strong body of original scholarship; for participating in service activities at the department, college, and university levels; and for serving as a dedicated mentor to undergraduate students in the department and beyond. We welcome candidates who demonstrate excellence in reflective multicultural and inclusive teaching practices and who display a strong commitment to collaboration and interdisciplinarity.

Application materials include: 1) cover letter that clearly summarizes the candidate's qualification and interests in this position; 2) current curriculum vitae; 3) teaching statement that conveys the candidate's interest in undergraduate teaching, describes the candidate's ideas or philosophy for equitable and inclusive teaching, and identifies courses which the candidate could offer in the department and to the wider college curriculum; 4) writing sample (dissertation chapter or another scholarly publication); 5) contact information for three potential references (letters may be requested by the search committee). Applications will only be accepted online through Bucknell's career site ( Applications will be reviewed beginning on November 1, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. Please address the cover letter to Professor Roger Rothman, Chair of the Search Committee.
