The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Scientist is responsible for enhancement of non-clinical MRI and MRSI functions and includes:
  • Assist in MRI and MRSI QA/QC and maintain operation of MRI, multi-nuclear, and Hyperpolarizer
  • Non-clinical imaging and analysis (MRI, MRSI, and all in vivo modalities)
  • Develop and implement new 13-Carbon metabolic imaging agents
  • Expand MRI and MRSI imaging hours
  • Implement new MRSI acquisition and analysis techniques
  • Work with NCI investigators on imaging submissions, protocols, analysis and publications.
  • Provide summary reports to NCI investigators and SAIP NCI steering committee members.
  • Work with hazardous chemical, biological or radiological materials.
  • Work with rodents in ABSL1 and ABSL2 environments. The imaging program is located within the animal facility.
  • Assist in all SAIP imaging, analysis, and administration functions

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a field related to biomedical research. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.)
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • No work experience beyond the doctorate is required for appointment at this level; however, some candidates may have had one or more years of postdoctoral research and training
  • Experience in rodent imaging tasks
  • Experience in non-clinical MRI and multi-nuclear MRI acquisition and analysis tasks
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate with management in a demanding scientific environment
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records and maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases
  • Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal imaging, data collection, and image analysis.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for MRI, MRSI, and the manufacture of 13C imaging probes.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and to wear respiratory protection equipment when necessary
  • Must be able to work alone, trouble shoot MRI and MRSI equipment and analysis issues
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Several years of experience in 13-Carbon MRSI imaging and analysis techniques
  • Experience in development of 13-Carbon hyperpolarization imaging probes
  • Ability to multi-task and work alone
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Doctoral degree in biomedical research with several years of postdoctoral research experience and training
  • Experience in non-clinical MRI and multi-nuclear MRI acquisition and analysis tasks
