PRINCIPAL LIBRARIAN CORY LIBRARY (GRADE 15)

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment in respect of non-RSA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit. In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

Purpose:

To develop, align and coordinate the library and archival operations of the Cory Library, including to develop and maintain collections within the field Africana, and specifically Eastern Cape Studies and related disciplines. To develop services aligned to the information needs of the university, and the regional and national heritage communities, representing Rhodes University within the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector. To support the research initiatives in the area of Digital Humanities, historical and regional histories at Rhodes University.

Requirements:

Education And Experience
A Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science (NQF level 8) OR a 3-year Degree, plus a 1-year Post-Graduate Library Diploma (NQF level 8) plus approximately 4 years' relevant experience where such experience includes: -
  • Experience in an academic or research library
  • Having worked in a computerised academic or research library
  • Previous exposure to IT applications and electronic library & information tools
  • Previous experience working with budgets
  • As least 3 years' previous supervision/management experience
  • Previous exposure to archival and records management
