The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering has a well-established Mechanics Division with research groups in structural-mechanics,

materials engineering and optimisation.

This appointment is aimed at supporting one or more of these research areas and to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the areas of strength of

materials, mechanical design, materials science or optimisation.

The position can be filled at any of three levels. Preference will be given to the most senior level.

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the areas of strength of materials, mechanical design, materials science, or optimisation;
  • Conducting research in the fields of structural mechanics, and/or materials engineering, and/or optimisation;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students in the areas of structural mechanics, and/or materials engineering, and/or optimisation;
  • Providing support and fundraising for research in the fields of structural mechanics, and/or materials engineering, and/or optimisation;
  • Rendering service to industry through specialist consulting.

Professor Job Requirements:
  • Relevant doctoral degree, plus at least ten years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience;
  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer by ECSA;
  • Proven academic and/or industry related management skills at senior level;
  • A strong, applicable, research record, including successful postgraduate supervision and publication record;
  • Sound communication and teaching skills;
  • Proficient in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Relevant doctoral degree, plus at least ten years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience;
  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer by ECSA;
  • Proven academic and/or industry related management skills at senior level;
  • A strong, applicable, research record, including successful postgraduate supervision and publication record;
  • Sound communication and teaching skills;
  • Proficient in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.

Associate Professor Job Requirements:
  • Relevant doctoral degree, plus at least five years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience;
  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent;
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer by ECSA;
  • Proven academic and/or industry related management skills at senior level;
  • A strong, applicable research record, including successful postgraduate supervision and publication record, or strong industry Research and Development record;
  • Sound communication and teaching skills;
  • Proficient in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.

  • Relevant doctoral degree, plus at least three years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience, OR
  • Relevant doctoral degree, plus at least three years' applicable practical, teaching and/or research experience, OR
  • An applicable master's degree in engineering with at least eight years' applicable technical or management experience in industry;
  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent;
  • Sound communication and teaching skills;
  • Proficient in English with the ability to function effectively in a multi-lingual environment;
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.

  • Rated by the NRF as a researcher;
  • A good research record in structural mechanics, materials engineering or optimisation, and proven fundraising in these areas;
  • PrEng registration (for Senior Lecturer).
