Job Description
SUMMARY

This position is with the Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate (POPCaP) within the VA Portland Health Care System. The Research Assistant will primarily support the research team where needed across multiple aspects of clinical research, as well as handle all lab duties including periodically drawing labs, organizing and labeling kits, and processing and shipping samples. Other duties may include but are not limited to patient logistics and management, data entry and organization, medical record review and data extraction, and other approved enhancements of research efforts

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assist study coordinators with required study procedures, patient visits, data entry, and other requirements per study protocol under the direct supervision of the Program Manager

- Keep track of study-sponsored lab kits and order additional kits as needed

- Process various lab specimens, including fresh tissue from biopsies and human stool

- Training in phlebotomy preferred

- Ability to clearly organize and/or adapt to multiple priorities at one time

- Ability to work well with other people as well as independently

- Critical thinking skills to interpret, implement, and assist in facilitating clinical research protocols

- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to follow various study protocols is critical

JOB DUTIES
  • Perform lab work including centrifugation/pipetting of biohazardous materials, preparing blood slides, and storing and shipping samples
  • Earn Radiation Safety training and periodically draw blood from patients
  • Independently keep track of expiring lab kits and order more as needed
  • Support coordinators by labeling tubes and processing lab samples amongst various studies, including blood, fresh and archival tumor tissue, urine, and stool
  • Stand in at patient visits as needed and report back live lab results to coordinators
  • Use electronic health record system to read through patient charts and identify potential participants for clinical trials
  • Administer surveys to patients
  • Enter patient data into electronic database systems and answer complex queries
  • Assist in maintaining organized and accurate study records
  • Support coverage across the study team, stepping in when necessary to screen and enroll patients, request and review medical records, and other study related tasks
  • Maintain a working knowledge of FDA and IRB guidelines that govern clinical research
  • Attend and participate in several weekly virtual team meetings
  • Attend research coordinator educational opportunities at OHSU and the Portland VA

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor's degree or higher; preferably in a scientific or social science discipline

- Previous experience working in a lab

- Previous experience with human subjects' research preferred

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Clear written and oral communication in English with Veterans of all backgrounds

COMPUTER SKILLS

Basic proficiency with: MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Access, Outlook

REASONING ABILITY

Able to use critical thinking skills to make decisions that are within scope, and to recognize when decisions are out of scope.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds. The employee is regularly required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
