Associate Dean, Sr. IT Director for Sheridan Libraries and University Museums
Position Summary:

The Associate Dean reports to the Sheridan Dean of University Libraries and is an essential member of the Dean's Council, the executive leadership team. The ideal candidate will provide leadership and management support for staff and programs in the Library Data Services, Digital Research and Curation Center, and the Library Applications units and directly supervises the leaders of these units. Additional responsibilities include actively and effectively participating in library-wide planning and decision-making as a member of the Sheridan Libraries' and University Museums leadership Team; providing visionary, energetic and innovative leadership in areas of responsibility; effective, efficient and creative management of resources.

This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a long-term vision and strategy for Information Technology for the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums. The ideal candidate will lead large scaled, complex projects requiring multi-disciplinary coordination and significant collaboration with researchers, vendors and library staff. Through oversight of the Library Applications team, the Associate Dean is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the unit that supports a variety of applications and technologies used by all Johns Hopkins libraries, involving a wide and diverse Library customer base.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the other Associate Deans and Directors of the Sheridan Libraries and University Museums to ensure that the Libraries effectively deploy and protect digital technologies and content needed by current and future users
  • Lead strategic and tactical planning to achieve institutional goals by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technologies
  • Develop a collaborative environment in which data and technology decisions are business-driven, and stakeholders and staff across the organization are adequately and appropriately engaged in decisions and prepared for change and user adoption
  • Guide and direct the division's efforts to collect, organize, manage, analyze, and share data and information to support business operations and decisions
  • Position colleagues and staff for success in relationships with other internal and external constituents
  • Develop outward-looking partnerships with faculty, other Hopkins staff and with external organizations at local, national and/or international levels
  • Actively participate in, and represent the Libraries at, relevant national and international professional associations

Minumum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • 10 years IT experience, including 5 years management experience
  • Additional education (Master's in a related field) may substitute required experience and additional related experience may substitute required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
    • JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in a technology or business field and proven experience leading large scale, complex projects
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible advancement services experience in a complex higher education and/or academic medicine environment

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Supervisory and management experience; ability to organize, direct, motivate, and evaluate performance of staff
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and people on a cross-functional, cross-organizational basis
  • Capability to establish strategic objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate a staff team and its individual members to achieve both project-based and operational goals
  • Superior interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to develop and deliver clear presentations to internal and external leadership
  • Ability to translate client needs to IT professionals as well as the ability to translate the capabilities of technology to clients
  • Ability to lead, direct, and motivate teams effectively
  • Ability to act with diplomacy and influence others
  • Excellent team building and collaboration skills
