*Laboratory Section Chief*The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Laboratory Section Chief. The primary purpose of this position is to supervise the day-to day activities of the immunology diagnostic laboratories. Position oversees laboratory staff, production of results from clinical sample analysis, quality assurance, development of new protocols, testing methods, and other administrative functions. Provides day-to-day work direction to employees and reviews progress. Hires, trains, provides feedback, evaluates performance, and initiates corrective action. Reviews and approves standard operating procedures. Performs administrative duties such as inventory control, billing, and generation of statistical data. Provides periodic cost analyses, fee change recommendations and evaluates new equipment for purchase. Implements laboratory policies and procedures. Deals with problems as they arise and makes certain that all samples are processed accurately and reported in a timely manner. Maintains a safe and compliant working environment and sees that the laboratory is prepared to perform its mission. Performs diagnostic testing at an expert level. Assists with research study design and budget considerations.

Qualifications
*Typical Responsibilities:*Supervises the day-to day activities of the immunology diagnostic laboratories. Oversees laboratory staff, scheduling and timely reporting of clinical sample analysis results, quality assurance, and other administrative functions. Provides day-to-day work direction to employees and reviews progress. Hires, trains, provides feedback, evaluates performance, and initiates corrective action. Reviews and approves standard operating procedures. Performs administrative duties such as inventory control and generation of statistical data. Provides periodic cost analyses, fee recommendations and evaluates new equipment for purchase. Develops and validates new testing methods/approaches. Implements laboratory policies and procedures. Deals with problems as they arise and makes certain that all samples are processed accurately and reported in a timely manner. Maintains a safe and compliant working environment and sees that the laboratory is prepared to perform its mission. Consults with clinicians and veterinary students regarding sample collection and interpretation of test results. Performs Flow Cytometry (a technique used to detect and measure physical and chemical characteristics of individual cells), real-time PCR (to detect gene expression and infectious agents), ELISA, and other bench-top molecular and cellular analyses offered by these laboratories at an expert level for diagnostic testing of clinical samples and in support of research, reporting findings. Instructs and assists graduate students in the use of the flow cytometer and other processes, data acquisition, and data analysis. Performs quality control daily and monthly. Performs testing of the quarterly external "VLA QC" program samples according to procedures outlined in a Chemical Hygiene notebook. Maintains records. Assists with research study design and budget considerations. Participates in relevant scientific professional societies and supervisory or laboratory management training courses. Maintains laboratory equipment and facilities. Reports broken equipment, disposes of unused equipment, requests services or repairs, removes hazardous waste, and maintains supplies and reagents. Is on call for after-hours cross matching for blood transfusions. Processes monthly billing utilizing on-line HCS computer system.*Minimum Qualifications:*Bachelor's degree in Biology, Immunology, hematology, or related field with 5-6 years of progressive experience working in diagnostic laboratory. *Preferred Qualifications:*Three or more years working in a diagnostic medical setting, analyzing patient samples and reporting the test results. Three or more years using complex computer software to acquire data and generate reports. Supervisory or laboratory management training or experience preferred. Relevant post-graduate degrees or coursework is preferred. Experience and knowledge of prevalent veterinary medical conditions/diseases/processes is preferred.
