Job Description
CLASSIFICATION: Administrative Support Staff

REPORTS TO: Director, CPA

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Working independently under the leadership of the Director of Communications, this candidate is a strong science writer with additional web savvy.

The successful candidate will write about Institute discoveries in news stories, press releases, blog pieces, multimedia, as well as other pieces as assigned for both online and print publications. The role will additionally serve as the Webmaster for the Institute's external website.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
  • Helps ideate and write science stories and other material for both online and print publications.
  • Take primary responsibility for adding content to, and maintaining the external website.
  • Execute additional multimedia pieces


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, science, journalism, or related field required, graduate degree in science journalism preferred.
  • Requires minimum 1-2 years of writing experience in a biomedical or science environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize Drupal website content management system and design tools to effectively structure information for the web.
  • Strong understanding of basic biological research and ability to translate its intricacies to both scientific and lay audiences in a lively, engaging manner.
  • Effectiveness in verbal and editorial skills, including writing, editing, proofreading, scheduling, and production
  • Outstanding project management skills, with ability to prioritize and execute complex projects requiring multiple departments and external contractors with the motivation to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Meticulous attention to detail as well as ability to see the big picture.
