The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is home to 15,000 students; 1,300 faculty and staff; and over 180,000 alumni. The College of LAS is searching for an Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs to lead the undergraduate student office for the college, developing and implementing initiatives to support students and instruction in the college, and supervising the professional staff of the office. Serves as a member of the college's leadership team.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide college-level leadership, strategic planning, assessment, programmatic development, and operational oversight for all major student-support areas related to the LAS undergraduate experience, including:

Academic Advising and Records

Access and Achievement Program

Honors/James Scholar Program

Life + Career Design Initiative

International Programs

Career Development

First Year Experience

Lead and supervise the activities of 35 staff members, including assistant deans, directors, assistant and associate directors, academic advisors, admissions/records officers, and non-academic support personnel. Responsibilities include:

Oversee and guide student programming and advising practices

Provide staff development opportunities

Promote an inclusive and healthy-productive office community

Conduct and supervise annual reviews of all staff

Serve as a member of the Dean's Cabinet. Serve as part of leadership team for annual activities, events, and projects in the Dean's office.

Serve as college academic affairs contact for faculty and staff with undergraduate student-related concerns, as well as for alumni and other off-campus stakeholders.

Coordinate with the LAS Associate Dean for Curricula and Academic policy to handle matters related to undergraduate education.

Participate in admissions reviews and academic advising as needed.

Serve as College representative for Big Ten Academic Alliance Career Initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Must possess qualifications warranting an appointment as a tenurable Associate or Full Professor in a department in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Ph.D. required. Successful leadership experience is required. Commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with diverse constituencies, is required. Effective management and leadership experience in improving the quality of one or more of the following: academic advising, "student - friendly" processes, curriculum-integrated enrichment opportunities for students' personal and professional development, creative use of educational technology, and constructive support interactions with units. A strong record of effective teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal/communication and teamwork skills. Ability to exercise initiative, confidentiality, discretion, and sound independent judgement. Ability to develop effective collaborative relationships with faculty and other key stakeholders. The ability to attract and retain a diverse staff and to develop effective working relationships with staff. Ability to assume significant responsibilities associated with leadership of a major undergraduate academic affairs unit. Record of achievement in one or more areas of academic student support, including academic advising of undergraduates, development of undergraduate academic support programs, and administrative systems supporting undergraduate academic affairs.

Appointment Information

This is a full-time nine-month (paid over twelve) faculty position with 2 months of summer salary. Salary is commensurate with experience.
