The new Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) Program in the College of Health Sciences at Utah Tech University in St. George, Utah, seeks a doctoral-prepared occupational therapist to ensure compliance with the capstone requirements of Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards.

The successful applicant will join an innovative team in the didactic and clinical development, and implementation of the OTD program, as well as have primary responsibility of managing and administering the capstone component of the curriculum including the planning and coordination of associated capstone education. The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator works collaboratively with the Program Director in developing and maintaining capstone specific documentation required for accreditation. The position includes teaching graduate level occupational therapy courses, with priority selection given to those applicants with expertise in mental health, children and youth, adult or older adult practice experience. In addition, the successful candidate will engage in student advisement and service to the University. All OTD faculty develop an agenda relative to research and/or scholarly activity for student capstone mentorship and involvement. The Doctoral Capstone Coordinator is provided sufficient release time to ensure that the needs of the capstone program are met.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain Program compliance with capstone requirements of ACOTE standards (Section D.1.0).
  • Serve as the liaison between course directors, program director, and interprofessional resources to achieve the objectives of the program, college, and university.
  • Ensure that the doctoral capstone reflects the sequence and scope of content in the curriculum design and allows for the development of in-depth knowledge in one or more of the following areas: clinical practice skills, research skills, administration, leadership, program and policy development, advocacy, education, or theory development.
  • Ensure that the doctoral capstone is designed through collaboration of the faculty and student and provided in settings consistent with the program's curriculum design, including individualized specific objectives and plans for supervision.
  • Collaborate with other departmental faculty to ensure that preparation for the doctoral capstone experience and project includes a literature review, needs assessment, identification of individualized goals and objectives, and an evaluation plan.
  • Identify, recruit, and secure capstone sites for the program.
  • Establish and maintain a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for each doctoral capstone experience site.
  • Collaborate with Academic Fieldwork Coordinator to ensure consistent communication of program needs with sites that provide both fieldwork and doctoral capstone experience placements.
  • Verify and document that each student is mentored by an individual with expertise consistent with the student's area of focus, prior to the onset of the doctoral capstone experience.
  • Document a formal evaluation mechanism for objective assessment of the student's performance during and at the completion of the doctoral capstone experience.
  • Collaborate with other departmental faculty to ensure completion and dissemination of an individual doctoral capstone project that relates to the doctoral capstone experience and demonstrates synthesis of in-depth knowledge in the focused area of study.
  • Develop and maintain, with the assistance of departmental staff, databases related to health requirements, immunizations, drug screens, and criminal background checks for students completing capstone experiences to ensure compliance with programmatic policies and procedures.
  • Orient students to capstone requirements and program expectations during capstone education.
  • Develop orientation and initial / ongoing education programs for capstone mentors.
  • Develop and implement a retention program for capstone mentors and capstone sites.
  • Assist the Program Director with completion of all required annual reports for program accreditation.
  • Teach in areas of expertise with the Program, as needed.
  • Maintain active membership in state and national professional associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Certification by NBCOT as OTR.
  • Possess a post-professional doctoral degree from a USDE-recognized regionally accredited institution. The doctoral degree is not limited to a doctorate in occupational therapy. Candidates who are near completion (e.g., ABD) of a doctoral program will be considered.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as an occupational therapist in the state of Utah.
  • Minimum of two years of professional practice experience.
  • A current and valid driver's license, with reliable personal transportation (job include frequent travel to capstone settings).
  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills needed for working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficient with computer technology and strong organization, problem-solving, and counseling skills.

PREFERRED OR DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in academic program or curricular development and knowledge of ACOTE standards.
  • Teaching experience at the college/university level.
  • Experience with online teaching.
  • Experience in scholarly activity.

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time (11-month) tenure-track faculty position. Faculty service, including pay and benefits, begins October/November 2022. Annual salary commensurate upon qualifications & experience; additional compensation available for overload teaching.
