The School of Optometry seeks a full-time faculty member to deliver high quality learning experiences and evaluation of the Ophthalmic Optics and Optics Curriculum. This position directs, manages, and evaluates the program to ensure the delivery of high quality education and works collaboratively with the Dean. Additionally, the incumbent provides mentorship to students and contributes to the visibility, impact and reputation of the University and its programs through research and scholarly engagement. The selected candidate will have responsibilities teaching, including classroom, laboratory, online and teaching, courses to our professional graduate Doctor of Optometry program. Subject matter may include ophthalmic optics, optics including the optics of low vision and contact lenses in addition to other courses as assigned. Rank will be commensurate with education and experience. The position will commence July 1, 2021 or soonest.

  • Delivers instruction in a didactic manner and provides experiential instruction via multiple formats (in-person, online, or in a 'blended' format) in the optometry program
  • Provides students an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria
  • Provides interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate the real-world applications of concepts covered
  • Support incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion into the curriculum, as well as co-curricular experiences, to broaden the education of students and expand their knowledge of health disparities.
  • Uses the University's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments and other materials and to communicate with students
  • Advises and assists students through in-person office hours or scheduled appointments, by phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms
  • Provides service including student mentoring, ongoing course development, and assessment
  • Attends and participates in monthly School and Department meetings, University ceremonies, and other major events, and serves as a member of University, School and/or Department committees, as assigned
  • Contributes to periodic reviews and revisions of departmental course offerings
  • Maintains advanced knowledge in discipline and areas of expertise
  • Collaborates with the opticians in 10 Optical to implement the didactic ophthalmic optics skills and knowledge into the student learning experience
  • Builds and maintains relationships with professional organizations involved with the healthcare sector
  • Leads and participates in the board preparation of students, including the generation and deployment of our internal comprehensive assessment exam; and to act as faculty liaison with external preparatory exam providers
  • Leads and participates in the board preparation support of our alumni
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Dean


Required:
  • Advanced education, Master's degree or higher in related discipline; terminal degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in the education of ophthalmic optics or optics
  • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience at the college level
  • Commitment to graduate education and student success
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively interact with a wide array of parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents, including healthcare industry executives)
  • Record of scholarly activities commensurate with an academic appointment
  • Evidence of teaching excellence
