The School of Optometry seeks a full-time faculty member to deliver high quality teaching and learning in the Contact Lens Curriculum at the level of Assistant to Associate professor.

The successful candidate will participate in teaching, including classroom, laboratory and clinic in the Contact Lens track and Theory and Methods track. The position reports to the dean and works collaboratively with Chief of the Contact Lens Service. Other duties will be assigned based on the interest of the applicant and needs of the program. The incumbent provides mentorship to students and contributes to the visibility, impact and reputation of the University and its programs through service, research and scholarly engagement. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. The position will commence July 1 2022 or sooner.

The selected candidate:
  • Delivers didactic instruction and provides experiential instruction via multiple formats (in-person, online, or in a 'blended' format) in the optometry program
  • Provides students an approved syllabus that includes course objectives and learning outcomes, teaching methodology, attendance policies in line with those of the School, texts and readings, assignments and deliverables, timelines, and evaluation criteria
  • Provides interesting and engaging assignments that demonstrate applications of concepts covered
  • Coordinates on-campus workshops provided by our industry partners to further the hand's on education of our students in the application of current contact lens technology
  • Precepts students in the care of patients in the clinics of the School's Eye and Vision Center and affiliated Health Care Center eye services
  • Supports incorporation of diversity, equity and inclusion into the curriculum, as well as co-curricular experiences, to broaden the education of students and expand their knowledge of health disparities
  • Uses the University's learning management system to post syllabus, assignments and other materials and to communicate with students
  • Advises and assists students through in-person office hours or scheduled appointments, by phone or email, and through other University-approved mechanisms
  • Provides service including student mentoring, ongoing course development and assessment as assigned
  • Attends and participates in monthly School and Department meetings, University ceremonies, and other major events, and serves as an active member of University, School and/or Department committees, as assigned
  • Contributes to periodic reviews and revisions of departmental course offerings
  • Maintains advanced knowledge in discipline and areas of expertise
  • Builds and maintains relationships with professional organizations involved with the healthcare sector
  • Leads and participates in the board preparation of students, including the generation and deployment of our internal comprehensive assessment exam; and to act as faculty liaison with external preparatory exam providers
  • Leads and participates in the board preparation support of our alumni

Required:
  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an ACOE accredited institution
  • Completion of an accredited optometric residency or fellowship program, preferably in the area of Contact Lenses and/or Anterior Segment is required
  • Minimum of three (3) years of didactic and clinical teaching experience at the professional level
  • Will be expected to seek Fellowship or active candidacy for Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry and Scleral Lens Education Society
  • Experience and expertise in prescribing all current modalities of contact lenses including but not limited to soft, specialty soft, gas permeable corneal, specialty gas permeable, scleral, Ortho-K and myopia control lenses
  • Record of scholarly activities commensurate with an academic appointment
  • Evidence of classroom and clinical teaching excellence based upon reviews from students and evaluations from academic and clinical supervisors
  • Commitment to graduate education and student success
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Demonstrated leadership potential
  • Ability to collaborate collegially with a variety of professionals with the University or clinical setting
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively interact with a wide array of parties at all levels (students, faculty, administration/staff, alumni, and external constituents, including healthcare industry executives)
