Under the leadership of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) / Provost, this position provides a major leadership role for the development, operation, and coordinated activities related to student retention and success. Charged with facilitating the academic success of lower-division students and undeclared major students. Directs the work of Academic Advisement, General Education, First-Year Experience, Honors Program, Student Success Center, New Student Orientation, and TRiO Programs.
Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Chief Academic Success and Retention Officer in the Division of Academic Affairs.
  • Serve as the Chief Academic Officer for the University College (administrative unit responsible for lower division programs).
  • Provide vision, direction and leadership in establishing shared standards, practices, processes, and metrics to improve student academic success, retention, and graduation rates of students in all academic departments.
  • Advise the Provost/VPAA on student academic success and retention strategies and initiatives, with focused attention on students with 0-60 earned credits.
  • Lead development and implementation of a strategic plan for achieving improved student academic achievement and success.
  • Coordinate with and support deans and chairs to design and implement department and/or college-level academic success initiatives. Liaise with associate deans or other dean designees to facilitate and advance academic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with associate provosts and other academic affairs leaders in cross-functional teams as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other university programs and units in the planning and implementation of institutional academic success/retention initiatives.
  • Implement and coordinate evidence-based academic success initiatives.
  • Coordinate the implementation and effective use of a student analytics/academic advisement management system.
  • Assist in developing and broadly implementing advanced student analytics across all academic units to improve academic success and retention.
  • Lead University College by significantly expanding and advancing the quality of, and access to, lower division programs and services to serve the southern Utah region.
  • Collaborate with deans, chairs, faculty and curriculum management to create new associate degree and certificate programs.
  • Supervise the directors of Academic Advisement and ensure coordination and integration of academic advisement with other units within academic affairs, student affairs, athletics and administrative services.
  • Supervise the Director of General Education and First Year Experience, including the Trailblazer Connections course.
  • Supervise the Director of New Student and Family Programs, Director Student Outreach Programs, Director of Student Success, Director of Student Support Services, University Registrar.
  • Supervise the Director of the Honors Program.
Qualifications

  • PhD, EdD or other terminal degree is required.
  • University teaching, curriculum or instruction experience required.
  • Five years or more of administrative experience in a college or university academic unit.
  • Familiarity and experience with the mission of lower division academic programs or the community college mission, curriculum and support services, associate degree and certificate programs, academic preparation strategies, general education, first year programs, and other academic success programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated record of successful leadership in student academic achievement, student success or retention-related program in academic affairs.
  • Demonstrated record of successful leadership in developing innovative academic degree and/or support programs.
  • Demonstrated record of successful leadership in academic advisement, student academic success, academic preparation, academic support assessment, and data analytics to support effective retention and success initiatives.
  • Experience with EAB Navigate-Student Success Platform strongly preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and members of the university community.
  • Leadership or desire for leadership in the profession of student academic success as evidenced by presentations at professional meetings and/or service to relevant professional associations.
  • Experience serving a diverse student population.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Full-time executive staff (overtime-exempt) position. Annual salary commensurate on qualifications and experience. Desired start date of January 2023.
