Position SummaryThe Michigan State University College of Human Medicine's Office of Student Affairs and Services invites applications for the Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development. The Assistant Dean for Student Career and Professional Development will report to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Services. The Assistant Dean will: oversee the career education, career advising, and career mentoring initiatives for the college, develop and coordinate a longitudinal career mentoring program for the medical students. The Assistant Dean will also develop and routinely update the College's career education curriculum and career advising resources, lead college-wide instruction for medical students about the residency match process and educate college leaders, faculty, and staff about the changing residency match process and how they can most effectively support students. In addition, the Assistant Dean is expected to provide evidence-based, data-driven educational materials; provide individual support to students expected to experience residency match challenges, including students who have had academic or professional difficulty, in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the student's respective Community Assistant Dean and Student Programs Administrator, and other faculty advisors.
The successful candidate will collaborate with other members of the Academic Affairs team in research and scholarly work relevant to career education, career advising, career mentoring, and the advancement of medical education, represent the College to external parties and develop relationships with regional and national collaborators who share similar goals of advancing career education and supporting students. The Assistant Dean is expected to collaborate with college leaders in developing policy that intersects with the student residency application and match process, cultivate expertise and share information about students in the military match, early match, and couples match, and other students in unique circumstances and provide educational support to graduates of the College who are re-entering the residency match process. The Assistant Dean also cultivates expertise in Student Affairs, and approach problems from a student-centered perspective and collaborates with the Office of Student Affairs and Services faculty and staff team to assist with unit-wide programming and perform other unit-wide duties, as requested by the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
The successful candidate will hold or be eligible for a faculty position in the College of Human Medicine at Assistant Professor rank or higher. The successful candidate will have at least two years' experience with medical education, including student mentoring/advising and curriculum development experience. The successful candidate will have experience in working with students and/or colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Regular periodic travel to the eight (8) college LCE communities, throughout the state of Michigan, is expected.

Minimum RequirementsThe successful candidate will have at least two years' experience with medical education, including student mentoring/advising and curriculum development experience. The preferred candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; and the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders within a complex, matrixed organization. The preferred candidate should have a strong desire to mentor and support medical students. The candidate should bring energy and creativity as a leader who develops curricula and policies that change regularly in response to the changing national environment.
Desired QualificationsPhysician candidates (MD or DO), and candidates with graduate medical education experience, are preferred. Regular periodic travel to the eight (8) college LCE communities, throughout the state of Michigan, is expected.
