Applicants are invited for the post of Senior Animal Technician/NACWO within the Biomedical Research Facility based on the University Hospital Southampton Campus. With a reputation for excellence, the facility provides support for scientists carrying out medical research in areas such as cancer, osteoporosis, neurology, ophthalmology and nutrition.

As Senior Animal Technician you will supervise a team of technical staff, ensure compliance under the Animal Scientific Procedures act 1986 (ASPA) and participate in the training and assessment of staff and researchers in accordance with Direct Observation of Practical Skills (DOP's). Further to this, you will provide facility inductions to staff, researchers and contractors ensuring awareness of Home Office, Facility, Health and Safety and University policies and procedures.

As NACWO you will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day husbandry, care and welfare of both large and small protected animal species held at the facility and be familiar with the main provisions of ASPA. You will hold appropriate managerial authority to promote high standards and possess excellent communication and diplomacy skills to champion a culture of care in-line with the 3Rs. you will also be a member of the main Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Board Committee (AWERB) and Scientific and Ethical review Group (SERG).

The post holder should hold a Personal License (PIL) category A - C, have prior surgical experience and will be responsible for carrying out a range of technical projects including BRF re-derivation and cryopreservation projects. The post holder should ideally have prior experience working within a laboratory setting.

Other responsibilities will include contributing to and working alongside the technical team, undertaking husbandry duties as required, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations and ordering and receiving supplies and services by raising requisitions, purchase orders and receipting of goods.
