Are you interested in supporting new interdisciplinary networks at the University of Leeds to establish themselves as proactive and forward-facing interdisciplinary hubs?

Would you like to be part of creating a diverse and energetic research community across the whole of the university campus?

Are you looking to apply your research, organisational and coordination skills and experience to a new challenge?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 135 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.

The University Strategic Plan (2020-2030) sets out an ambition to place the University of Leeds at the heart of a global network, finding innovative solutions to regional, national, and global challenges. Key to delivering this vision is the establishment and development of the Horizons Institute . The Horizons Institute challenges colleagues to shape radical new responses to the 'wicked problems' that confront the world; work with external partners to showcase Leeds research excellence and generate new ideas for productive collaboration; and develop global partnerships based on equity and mutual benefit. A key dimension of the Horizons Institute's work will be to encourage new ways of interdisciplinary and cross-sector working, with an essential focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Each year, the Horizons Institute will convene 3-4 challenge theme networks, each extending over one academic year and addressing a major societal, scientific or technological challenge requiring interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral expertise. Set up by University of Leeds researchers, the Horizons Institutes supports the establishment and growth of thriving interdisciplinary networks that:

You will support the four existing challenge networks as they continue to grow. You will support the design and delivery of events to bring researchers together and with non-academic partners and the public and you will help identify opportunities for case studies to showcase and promote the networks. You will work closely with the wider Horizons Institute team comprising of the Institute Manager, the Business Support Officer, the Policy and Communications Officer and Research Managers.

You will support the design, delivery, and implementation of an innovative mechanism, driven from the ground up, to identify and select four new challenge themes from January 2023 onwards. You will help co-develop and co-curate a programme of activities including Sandpits or Collaborative Design Labs and Insight Sessions to select and support network development and the interdisciplinary leadership and research capacity of the network co-leads.

Once officially launched in September 2023, you will serve as the bridge between the four new challenge networks and between the networks and the Horizons Institute. You will support the challenge networks to undertake research activities including the design and delivery of research events with partners. You will help to establish a network forum between the new networks to enable opportunities for cross-fertilisation of ideas and best practice sharing and work with the networks to develop a roadmap to outline their plans for the academic year and to think beyond the Horizons Institute.

This post offers the opportunity to be part of setting up a new cross-campus institute. You will gain experience of engaging with colleagues from across the University, helping to establish new systems and structures, and of engaging with external partners.
