Background

The IAHR has recently entered into an exciting strategic research partnership with Sun Yat-Sen University First Affiliated Hospital (SYSU FAH) in Guangzhou, China. The aims of the programmes include the establishment of a large-scale community-based cohort of middle aged and older people in Guangzhou. Housed in the newly established National Medical Center at SYSU FAH, this cohort study will capitalise on a set of unique opportunities in the local setting and will use cutting edge methods to address key questions in health, well being and longevity that are of global importance. The postholder will be based mainly in Birmingham but is expected to travel regularly to Guangzhou once pandemic restrictions are eased, frequency of which will be discussed and agreed before the appointment.

Within the IAHR we tackle global health challenges; prevent disease and improve healthcare using research and methodological innovations. There are excellent opportunities for academic progression and a cherished culture of being family-friendly and collegiate. Our research performance was ranked 5th (out of similar units in 33 British universities) in REF 2021. Two thirds of our research was rated as world leading, with the rest considered as internationally excellent.
