ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR (ONE POST)

BACKGROUND:

The University of Pretoria is seeking a dynamic agricultural economist to join our team. He/she will actively support and contribute to the commitment of the University of Pretoria's vision to become a leading research university in Africa. The candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in agricultural economics, supervising postgraduate students and establishing a substantial research programme on an area related to agricultural economics in line with the Department's and Faculty's strategic direction.

The Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Rural Development provides top-quality undergraduate training in agribusiness management and agricultural economics and profession-orientated Honours programmes in agribusiness management, extension and rural development. Our sought-after postgraduate programme has been host to the Collaborative Masters in Agriculture and Applied Economics for 15 years, training over 1500 students from across Africa. Our research programmes solve practical, relevant problems and provide scientific, evidence-based research for policy aimed at improving incomes, food security and livelihoods for households and furthering the development of our African continent.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Teaching and learning in the undergraduate and postgraduate agricultural economics programmes;
  • Postgraduate supervision at Honours, Masters and PhD levels;
  • Developing a substantial research programme;
  • Fundraising;
  • Community development.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The appointment may be made at the Associate Professor or Professor level. The requirements for these appointments are set out below.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:
  • PhD, Masters and Undergraduate Degree in Agricultural Economics with at least 5 years' relevant tertiary teaching and curriculum development experience in agricultural economics;
  • Academic status and at least national recognition;
  • A proven research and publication track record as evidenced by publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals in respected accredited journals in agricultural economics;
  • A proven track record of the successful supervision of masters and PhD agricultural economics students;
  • A good track record of international research collaboration and successful acquisition of external research grants.

PROFESSOR:
  • PhD, Masters and Undergraduate Degree in Agricultural Economics with at least 8 years' relevant tertiary teaching and curriculum development experience in agricultural economics;
  • Academic status and both national and international recognition;
  • A proven research and publication track record as evidenced by publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals in respected accredited journals in agricultural economics;
  • A proven track record of the successful supervision of Masters and PhD agricultural economics students;
  • A good track record of international research collaboration and successful acquisition of external research grants.


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
  • Research experience in the classic elements of agricultural economics, namely production economics, price analysis, supply and demand analysis, cost benefit and impact assessment and experience in quantitative modeling of these elements;
  • Team and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Skilled at managing diversity;
  • The ability to lead research and teaching programmes;
  • Ability to raise funds.


ADDED ADVATNTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
  • Active engagement with the food and agricultural sector and solving its challenges in Africa;
  • Appropriate NRF rating.


The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
