DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION

PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • The strategic, academic and operational management of the department;
  • Promoting, planning, organizing and managing academic and research programs and the department's research profile;
  • Ensuring scholarly academic and professional education and training;
  • Managing all financial activities including externally funded projects and fundraising;
  • Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;
  • Improving the Department's diversity profile;


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Professor:

  • A relevant doctorate degree;
  • Registration at a relevant professional body;
  • Recognised academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Involved in PhD supervision and successful delivery of Masters graduates;
  • An established national and international profile and networks;


Associate Professor:

  • A relevant doctorate degree;
  • Registration at a relevant professional body;
  • Recognised academic status in the relevant discipline;
  • A proven research and publication record;
  • Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;
  • Experience with postgraduate supervision;
  • An established national profile and networks;


REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Managerial skills and competencies;
  • Good understanding of professional qualifications;
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent communication skills;
  • An empowering leadership style;
  • Accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Diversity management experience;
  • Ability to manage time and prioritise effectively; and
  • An appropriate vision for the Department.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

Candidates are expected to make a 15-minute presentation to the Faculty Recruitment and Selection Committee on his/her vision for the Department.

Although candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years. Preference will be given to the incumbent for re-appointment for a second term if they are available for appointment.
