Position Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, with the right combination of journalistic and administrative skills, the Associate Dean will configure and help shape the curriculum and faculty at the nation's premier journalism school with an eye to achieving the strategic goals of the institution and the profession. Plays a key role in overseeing policies and services that support the school's strategic goals. These include faculty recruitment and management, schedule management, technology and space management, tutoring and academic support, as well as curriculum evolution.

Responsibilities

Works closely with faculty (full and part-time) on course development and implementation, as well as providing resources. Oversees recruitment, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of faculty, retention of part-time, and recruitment of visiting faculty. Adheres to university protocols for appointments and payments with responsibility for managing and advising on budget matters. Assess instructional gaps and look for opportunities to adapt the curriculum to meet emerging needs. Manages staff members who direct programs of instruction in journalistic specialties, like broadcast and audio.

Works closely with senior leadership in setting long-term and strategic goals for the department and the school. Directs the development and implementation of academic affairs policies and procedures at the school.

Manages relations with other schools and the Provost's office on curricular and related matters.

Develops and manages programs to provide training for instructors, including the rapidly evolving techniques of modern journalists.

Assesses the effectiveness of curriculum, prepares reports, and makes relevant proposals based on findings. Conducts institutional research and actively collaborates with other senior leaders on the accreditation process.

Manages a team, completing daily tasks while directing projects. Creates processes and guides instructors advising students on their master's projects and theses. Works with students directly as time allows.

Sets and achieves strategic goals that strengthen and support the faculty and curriculum. Accomplishes department objectives by managing staff; planning and evaluating department activities. Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Accomplishes staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results. Conducts timely performance evaluations and manages performance issues.

Serves as an ex-officio member of faculty and other related committees. Undertakes special projects and performs other related duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's Degree required. Advanced degree desirable.

Experience: Minimum 7 years of related experience. Experience in journalism instruction preferred.

Other Skills: Excellent planning, organization, budget, and management skills; must have, or be able to develop quickly, detailed knowledge of the School's and University's policies and procedures; excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to handle delicate personnel situations with tact, wisdom, and discretion. Must demonstrate a record of initiative in solving problems and devising creative solutions with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in journalism instruction preferred.
