**What You Will Do**

The Solid Mechanics team within the T-3 group of the Theoretical Division is seeking a highly motivated and productive postdoc candidate to develop and/or enhance microstructure aware continuum solid polymer mechanics models, with a focus on predicting the mechanical response of polymers due to various damage and degradation mechanisms. You will develop predictive constitutive theories that rely on microstructural quantities such as molecular weight, cross-linking density, etc. which may vary given specific synthesis processes, environmental conditions, and thermomechanical lifecycles. In addition to theory development, the successful candidate will also perform numerical implementation of the constitutive theory into either Lagrangian or Eulerian based solid mechanics codes. Collaboration and experimental support from the Materials Science and Technology Division (Engineered Materials, MST-7) will help bolster material model calibration and validation. You will engage in frequent communication of accomplishments with the primary mentor, contribute know-how in technical discussions, fulfill technical goals, and satisfy required deliverables, such as codes, models, and know-how in the form of LANL reports, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and software. You will agree to and follow LANL safety and security procedures.

**What You Need**

**Minimum Job Requirements:**

**Education/Experience** : A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related fields is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of their Ph.D. or soon to be completed prior to appointment.

Knowledge and/or experience in the following topics:

• Polymer/amorphous solid mechanics modeling

• Experience in Fortran, Python, or any other programming languages used for scientific applications

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

**Desired Qualifications:**

Strong knowledge or willingness to learn and apply following topics or techniques:

• Experience in damage and degradation modeling

• Numerical algorithm development for solid mechanics problems

• Commercial finite element software

• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting

• Strong evidence of peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations

Candidates with expertise in atomistic or molecular dynamics modeling, but highly motivated to focus on continuum scale modeling are also encouraged to apply.
