Assistant Professor of Learning, Design, andTechnology

The Department of Learning and Performance Systems isseeking a justice-focused or critically-oriented learning sciencesscholar to join Penn State's College of Education as atenure-track Assistant Professor of Learning, Design, andTechnology for Fall 2023. As outlined in the strategic plan guidingthe College's ongoing efforts, we are committed to transformingeducational systems as a part of our endeavor to create a moreequitable and just education system for the people of Pennsylvania,the nation, and the world. Current departmental faculty are in themidst of building and strengthening community, rethinking andrevitalizing existing curriculum, and engaging in exciting researchefforts to facilitate these and other processes moving us towardthe goals of the strategic plan. We seek a colleague whoseresearch, teaching, and service will contribute to educating forchange, as evidenced by their professional portfolio andvision.

The successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing efforts inthe Learning, Design, and Technology program toward preparingequity-driven learning technologists, designers, and researchers.We are particularly interested in candidates whose researchdemonstrates a commitment to justice and critical perspectives inthe design or application of digital technologies.

Position Details:

The Learning, Design, and Technology (LDT) faculty is excited toadd a new member to our community. The position is a tenure-trackappointment at the Assistant Professor level with an expectation ofparticipation and teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs,both residential and online.

We are interested in candidates with expertise in learningtechnologies and learning sciences that would complement ourcurrent strengths, including but not limited to:

● using technologies to support a sense of belonging among learnersof color, LGBTQ+ learners, learners with disabilities, migrantlearners, or learners from other communities minoritized acrosseconomic, cultural, political, and social dimensions;

● designing, adapting, or remixing technologies to disrupt systemsof oppression (such as white supremacy or neoliberal capitalism)that intersect with learning settings and institutions;

● learning technologies to support thriving democracies and socialtransformations;

● developing technology-enhanced learning environments that supportand sustain diverse lifeways and ways of knowing;

● justice-focused computer science education or computing andidentity;

● emerging research and design methodologies to study learning thatchallenge received and potentially problematic models of knowledgeproduction;

● educational applications of critical data science or science andtechnology studies; or

● critical approaches to AI and machine learning foreducation.

The position offers opportunities to contribute to residentialundergraduate and graduate programs (e.g., general educationcourses, M.S., Ph.D.), and online graduate programs (e.g., M.Ed.andthe newly established College-wide D.Ed.). The successful candidatewill be expected to engage in recruiting and mentoring studentsfrom diverse backgrounds who are interested in LDT.

The university and surrounding community offer opportunities fordeveloping scholarly collaborations, including with schools,informal learning settings, public media, local makerspaces,affinity groups, and entities within the University including theConsortium for Social Movements and Education Research andPractice, the Rock Ethics Institute, and other researchinitiatives.

Responsibilities:

● Develop and maintain a learning sciences research program in anarea relevant to LDT

● Seek external funding to support the research program and LDTgraduate students.

● Contribute to and teach courses in LDT at the undergraduate andgraduate level, residentially and online.

● Advise master's degree students in the completion of theircapstone portfolios and/or research theses, and supervise doctoralstudents in their programs and research.

● Provide service, outreach, and leadership to the University,educational and informal learning institutions, agencies,professional organizations, and learned societies.

Required qualifications (commensurate withexperience):

● An earned doctorate in the learning sciences or an equivalentdoctoral degree in a related field (e.g., learning technologies,human-computer interaction, education) by the appointment startdate

● Demonstrated commitment to principles of equity and justice

● Potential to develop and maintain a research agenda in LDT,including a strong potential for scholarly publications

● Willingness to teach high-quality residential and online coursesin LDT at the undergraduate and graduate levels

Desirable qualifications:

● Experience teaching engaging, interactive residential or onlinelearning experiences

● Commitment to equity-oriented approaches to teaching andadvising

● Interest in design of learning environments or applied technologyand design

● Interest or experience advising undergraduate or graduatestudents in research

● Interest or experience with use of digital technology in highereducation

● Commitment to collegiality and collaboration

● Potential for obtaining external funding (especially for fundinggraduate students), commensurate with experience.
