About the Role

All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty and/or University level, and make some contribution to their profession.


A PhD in Anthropology/Archaeology or closely related field. Candidates should have the ability to teach and research in some or all of the following disciplinary areas: Biological Anthropology, palaeoanthropology/paleoecology and forensic anthropology. Experience of teaching quantitative research methods is highly desirable.

In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

Basic Salary: R 493,443.00
