The University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor of Practice in Jazz Studies. This is a full-time, non-tenure track (RTPC), benefits-eligible appointment for an initial period of three years. Renewal beyond the initial three-year period of appointment is possible, at the discretion of the Thornton Dean. The appointment begins August 16, 2023.

As part of the Thornton School of Music's Division of Contemporary Music, the Jazz Studies Department offers the following degrees in jazz studies: D.M.A., M.M., B.M., the Graduate Certificate, and the Jazz minor.

Minimum Requirements and Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have expertise and direct experience in school music education.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Education: Master's Degree in Jazz studies
Preferred Experience: High-level professional performance experience. The preferred candidate will have several years of experience teaching at the collegiate or pre-professional level.

Duties:

Principal duties will include private instruction for jazz drum students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching ensembles, instructing part of the Jazz Elements class. Engaged in the leadership of the Jazz Studies department including being present, attending meetings, participating in curricular development and Thornton governance. Additional related duties may be assigned, based on the needs of the department and the qualifications of the candidate.
