The Office of Public Health Studies (OPHS) is part of the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health. OPHS offers specializations in epidemiology, health policy and management, Native Hawaiian and Indigenous health, and social and behavioral health sciences. Degrees offered include the bachelor of arts (BA), master of public health (MPH), master of science (MS) in public health, and doctor of philosophy (PhD). The OPHS is seeking an Assistant Professor in Epidemiology/Data Science (Position #0083002) to teach undergraduate and graduate public health students and other health professionals to begin August 2023. Applicants who are ABD will be considered, however, degree requirements must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

● Teach online and in-person courses in introductory and advanced biostatistics and quantitative methods courses and other public health topics to undergraduate and graduate public health students and other health professionals

● Conduct and maintain a program of research on topics related to biostatistics and data science with a focus on sustainability, Indigenous, and environmental health as evidenced by extramural grants, publications, and scholarly activities and products

● Plan and establish new courses and programs

● Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate public health students

● Participate in student recruitment and retention efforts

● Serve on departmental and university committees

● Provide service to professional and community stakeholders as relevant to the individual's academic specialty

● Perform other related tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

● PhD, DrPH, or equivalent in biostatistics or related field from a college or university of recognized standing

● Demonstrated ability and/or passion for teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

● Demonstrated ability to conduct active research through peer-reviewed publications, grant proposals, and/or other scholarly products

● Training or experience in topics related to sustainability, Indigenous, and/or environmental health

● Demonstrated ability to work well with others

● Excellent oral and written communication skills

● Experience working in multicultural settings

● Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others

Desirable Qualifications:

● Established record of effective teaching to both undergraduate and/or graduate students through classroom and/or distance education modalities

● Demonstrated ability to develop new courses and/or programs

● Experience in supervising and/or mentoring students in higher education

● Familiarity with public health applied learning experiences

● Established record of active research through publications, grants, etc in data science and/or biostatistics related to sustainability, Indigenous, and/or environmental health

● Training and/or experience in key areas of the Thompson School including social work, aging, gerontology, life course perspective research

● Demonstrated ability to actively collaborate on research

● Experience working in indigenous and/or multicultural settings including Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Asians, and/or indigenous individuals
