The String Theory and Holography Group in the School of Mathematical Sciences invites applications for up to 3 postdoctoral fellowships to work on our broad research programme in quantum field theory and string theory and gravity. The positions are funded by the Science and Technology Funding Council (STFC) and we will make appointments in any areas of research across our programme, including for example research in amplitudes, conformal field theories, all aspects of holographic dualities, supergravity, black holes, integrable systems, renormalisation group and other mathematical aspects of quantum field theory and gravity. The 3-year positions will normally start in September 2023.

Academic context:

Successful applicants will join the String Theory and Holography Group within Mathematical Sciences and the Southampton Theory, Astronomy and Gravitation (STAG) research centre, which bridges the Schools of Mathematical Sciences and Physics. The STAG Research Centre provides a stimulating and collegial environment for research collaborations, and you will be encouraged and enabled to collaborate with our groups in theoretical particle physics and string theory.. Members include: Prof. Marika Taylor, Prof. Kostas Skenderis, Prof. Oscar Dias, Dr. Ines Aniceto, Dr. Felix Haehl, Dr. Carlos Mafra, Dr. Andreas Schmitt, Dr. David Turton, Dr. Ben Withers and Dr. Itamar Yaakov in Mathematical Sciences, as well as Prof. Nick Evans, Prof. James Drummond, Dr. Omer Gurdogan, Prof. Tim Morris and Dr. Andy O'Bannon in Physics. Furthermore, the Gravity Group in Mathematical Sciences works closely with the String Theory Group and studies gravitational waves, neutron stars and black holes.

Applicants' profile:

Successful applicant(s) will have a track record of research in some of amplitudes, conformal field theories, all aspects of holographic dualities, supergravity, black holes, integrable systems, renormalisation group or other mathematical aspects of quantum field theory and gravity. They will contribute to the development of the research group.

*Applicants for Research Fellow positions will be from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of their PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title will be Senior Research Assistant.

EDI working environment:

The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to promoting equality and diversity, and holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award demonstrating this commitment. We welcome applicants from all sections of the community, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation, and will give due consideration to applicants seeking flexible working patterns and to those who have taken a career break.
