Position Summary

A Staff Scientist position in the laboratory of Dr. Guido Marcucci, Department of Hematologic Malignancies Translational Science of City of Hope, is presently being recruited. The Staff Scientist series is designed for career research professionals whose primary function is to support the research infrastructure and activities of the institution. Staff Scientists will bring special skills, knowledge, and experience to research programs or institutional core laboratories

The Marcucci laboratory studies the pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and related myeloid malignancies/premalignancies and the development of new treatments for them based on these discoveries. Work in the lab utilizes both genetically engineered mouse models, patient-derived AML xenograft models, and in vitro systems. Techniques commonly used include: molecular biology, protein characterization including western blotting, flow cytometry, immunology, tissue culture, and microscopy, including the use of fluorescent probes.

The ideal candidate will have experience in cancer drug development, pharmacology, cancer immunology, flow cytometry, cell culture, mouse xenograft models, molecular biology techniques including cloning and qPCR.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
  • PhD/MD degree in a relevant field with at least 3 years of experience
  • Ability to effectively lead other scientists in a translational research environment in order to successfully meet deadlines and perform and prioritize simultaneous tasks. Requires use of discretion and judgment when handling confidential information.
  • Ability to design and execute experiments, critically interpret experimental results, and present data in a cogent and meaningful manner.
  • Ability to produce first drafts of grant proposals, study protocols and manuscripts for publication of research findings.
  • Under minimal direction of the Principal Investigator, directs the work pertaining to assigned projects including supervision of technical lab staff. Responsible for the development and execution of major research projects and performs state-of-the-art, complex research projects in collaboration with researchers within the group/department and outside of the lab, making significant, original contributions including authorship or co-authorship of published findings.
  • Ensures that all laboratory activities are carried out in compliance with City of Hope safety, animal and human specimen use regulations.
