Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under limited supervision, the Research Assistant 3 will coordinate research work supported by the NIH grant that focuses on identifying a new therapy for Alzheimer's disease. This position will work with animals and purified proteins.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Coordinate laboratory/ research activities. Conduct pharmacologic treatment and maintenance of mouse colonies of the specified sizes; Isolate mouse tissues and assess them for sterol content, protein expression by Western blots, and gene expression by qRT-PCR. Express in E. coli and purify recombinant proteins. (50%)
  2. Work closely with the principal investigator and discuss on a daily basis the progress of current assignments. (7%)
  3. Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature. Conduct preliminary analysis of the omics data. (10%)
  4. Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training. Develop protocols for Western blot and qRT-PCR for the identification of a new protein and gene target. (7%)
  5. Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyzes data. Perform data analysis for sterol quantifications, Western blots, and qRT-PCR. (7%)
  6. May supervise students and technicians. Train new staff regarding standard laboratory policies as well as basic laboratory techniques. (7%)
  7. May co-author research projects. Provide data to the principal investigator for sponsor progress reports, manuscripts, grants, and pilot applications. May monitor the laboratory budget. (7%)

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees to exchange information.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

May supervise students and technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 3 to 5 years of related experience required.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor of Science degree in biology or biochemistry is required.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  1. Has knowledge of commonly-used biological/biochemical/molecular biology concepts, laboratory practices, and procedures within biomedical field.
  2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  3. Previous experience working with animals preferred.
  4. Must demonstrate compliance with Case Western Reserve University animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
  5. Must demonstrate compassion for animals within Case Western Reserve University facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center's mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.
  6. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  7. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  8. Ability to interact with colleagues and supervisors face to face.


WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards. This position is not eligible for the staff hybrid work program.
