Job Description

Working under limited supervision, the Research Assistant 3 will coordinate research and project management activities for federally funded projects addressing ethical, legal, and social implications of genetic research. These include two multi-year qualitative research studies, "Patient Supported Approaches to Gene Editing (PaSAGE)" and "Emerging Challenges in Newborn Screening: Benefits and Harms of Receiving Uncertain Prognoses After NBS." Both projects employ qualitative social science methodologies to investigate ethical and social issues in biomedical research, clinical care, and public health. The research assistant will ensure successful implementation of the studies, filling a range of roles providing administrative, technical and data management support to meet study goals, while adhering to regulatory requirements.

  1. Coordinate research project activities and manage protocol progress, including research study recruitment and oversight of operations for research studies and grant subcontracts. Organize and manage inter- and intra-site communications for research projects. (18%)
  2. Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature and work with principal investigator and research team to devise new qualitative research instruments and protocols, including Institutional Review Board submissions and other compliance protocols. (15%)
  3. Recruit research study participants, conduct semi-structured, in-depth research interviews, arrange all logistical details such as location and participant compensation. Locate potential participants and promote research participant opportunities through appropriate venues. (15%)
  4. Work closely with principal investigator in data analysis, evaluate adequacy of techniques, study and test new procedures including the development of qualitative codes and coding qualitative data. (10%)
  5. Maintain data management protocols, study data and research databases of recruitment efforts and participant demographic information. Code and analyze qualitative data. Transcribe and proofread interview transcripts. Collect and compile additional data and literature relevant to the study aims. (15%)
  6. Work with principal investigators to manage project budgets and resources. (6%)
  7. Conduct independent literature searches that are relevant to research projects, summarize and annotate results. (6%)
  8. Coordinate the preparation of research reports, presentations and manuscripts. May co-author research projects. (10%)

Department: Daily contact with other research staff, including weekly and monthly research team meetings and conference calls with off-site collaborators in multi-site research studies.

University: Frequent contact faculty in other departments with respect to ongoing research projects on an as-needed basis.

External: Frequent contact with other investigators and staff from collaborating institutions, research subjects and potential participants with respect to ongoing research projects.

Students: Regular contact with students who serve as graduate research assistants on projects for training.


Supervision of student research assistants and other research staff depending on project needs.


Experience: 3 to 5 years of research experience in the social sciences, public health, or bioethics required. Experience with bioethical scholarship, public-health research, and/or qualitative social science preferred. Familiarity with biological sciences and medical terminology preferred.

Education: Bachelor's degree in the social sciences, public health, humanities or a related discipline is required. Master's degree preferred.

  1. Experience with qualitative research methods, including interviewing and data analysis.
  2. Strong organizational skills, verbal and written communication skills, and demonstrated analytic abilities.
  3. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an efficient and timely manner.
  4. Proficiency with standard computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel).
  5. Preferred familiarity with major bibliographic search engines (e.g., PubMed).
  6. Preferred familiarity with qualitative data analysis software (e.g., Atlas.ti, NVivo, Dedoose).
  7. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and research participants face to face and via telephone and videoconferencing software.
  8. Ability to meet consistent attendance.


This position will be based in the Department of Bioethics within the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. There will be no exposure to biological/chemical hazards.
