Job Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, the Research Assistant 4 will coordinate major activities in the histology laboratory to include tasks to support the Histology lab operations, monitor technical and quality assurance activities and maintain lab adherence of all applicable regulatory CLIA, OSHA, EPA and CDC standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Coordinate major activities of the histology laboratory. Activities shall include processing, embedding, section and perform necessary stains to highlight specific tissue patterns and structures. Perform high level, complex data analysis and calculation of data from experiment results; interpret and make recommendations. Produce test reports accurately and in a timely manner. (30%)
  2. Perform the most complex analytic procedures. Performing immunohistochemical staining using special techniques including autoclaving and tissue denaturants of brain tissue. Utilize new and innovative research techniques involving a high degree of skill and training. Perform quality control (QC) on finished slide preparations. Maintain required documentation for quality control, deviations. Maintain and troubleshoot equipment operation failures; take appropriate actions to keep interruptions in workflow to a minimum. (30%)
  3. Provide input and recommendation to principal investigator involving research requests from internal and external clients. Consult with NPDPSC management and directors of the division on projects as assigned. (15%)
  4. Assist in developing new histology and lab procedures and policies. Review and update to current protocols as required by regulatory standards. Track orders and inventory, maintain stock and solutions. (10%)


NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Teach or instruct new histology personnel/assistants regarding policies and procedures, may include students. Provide assistance to lab coworkers with workflow as needed within the histology department (5%)
  2. Co-author research projects as assigned by the principal investigator. Maintain block/slide filing system. (5%)
  3. May supervise research assistants and technicians. (
  4. Perform other duties as assigned. (


CONTACTS

Department: Frequent contact with the manager and directors of the division to maintain workflow. Frequent contact with other members of the research group, graduate student research assistants, student employees, and other personnel, in addition to faculty and postdoctoral fellows to maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with faculty and staff in the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and numerous support and service departments to maintain workflow.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees to maintain workflow.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 5 to 8 years of related experience required.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree in science required; preferably in biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology. Graduate of a certified histology school and/ or ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certified or eligible in Histology (HT) preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  1. Knowledge and understanding of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of histology.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of the Immunohistochemical methodology.
  3. Ability to operate all lab equipment needed to perform immunochemical lab work.
  4. Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university and with individuals outside the university.
  6. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills and follow-through.
  7. Ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff.
  8. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable, proactive and a self-starter.
  9. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  10. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate excellent analytical skills, sound judgment and good decision-making.
  11. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines.
  12. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, database applications, and with internet navigation.
  13. Must demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer programs as needed.
  14. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  15. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face-to-face.


WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will work mostly in BSL2 facilities, and will use infectious materials, general chemicals, radioactive materials, and laboratory animals. May lift up to 24 lbs.
