SUMMARY:
Montclair State University seeks a creative and collaborative leader to serve as Associate Dean for Collections & Discovery at the Harry A. Sprague Library. Reporting to the Dean of Library Services, and serving on the administrative team consisting of the Dean, Associate Dean for Research, Teaching & Engagement and the Associate Dean for Collections & Discovery. The Associate Dean for Collections & Discovery shapes all aspects of collections and discovery for Sprague Library.

While each Associate Dean position has an individual area of responsibility, both support holistic library-wide approaches to strategic planning and communication and an environment of innovation and collaboration. The Associate Dean assists with all aspects of library management and planning. Associate Deans are expected to lead by promoting teamwork, diversity, and inclusiveness within the Library and the campus. In addition, the Associate Deans serve as the Library's representative and advocate to relevant university, consortia, and multi-institutional groups. The Associate Dean serves as an ambassador and advocates for the Library with University constituencies, and with state, regional, and national organizations. The Associate Dean leads a team of librarians, professionals, and support staff to develop, assess, improve and promote user-focused resources and services to the university community. The division is tasked with all aspects of collections management, as well as maintaining access to, and security of the physical library. The library is revising its content strategy, balancing questions of access versus ownership, and seeks to re-imagine the collections to serve the University community best. The successful candidate will have experience in navigating a changing environment, motivating and leading teams, cultivating partnerships, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

The Library is a member of Lyrasis, PALCI, and VALE.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides leadership, strategic direction, and support for the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Library collections and user-centered and accessible access services.

Directs Access Services & Resource Sharing; Cataloging, Metadata & Archive Services; Collection Development & Acquisitions; E-resources and Periodicals (6 librarians, I professional, IO+ support staff, parttime staff and student assistants).

Designs, implements, and evaluates innovative programs and services using evidence-based methods.

Promotes organizational effectiveness through strategic leadership, policy development, planning, and resource management.

Provides budget analysis, budget forecasting and strategic budget planning.

Advances diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the collection and in user-centered services.

Cultivates relationships with academic leadership, engages in campus-level initiatives, and builds partnerships with University and external communities.

Participates in and provides opportunities for employees, in professional development for the purpose of continuing education and contributing to the profession.

Monitors library higher education and technology trends to guide innovation.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program.

A minimum of five years of academic or research library experience (could also be consortial or related) with administrative and supervisory responsibility in one or more of the following areas: access services, collection development, collection management, metadata services, archives, or preservation.

Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating employees.

Experience with budget management, including budget analysis and budget forecasting.

Demonstrated leadership skills, and ability to influence and manage change, inspire innovation, delegate responsibility appropriately, and successfully foster library employee development.

Strong interpersonal, public communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility.

Record of professional service, scholarly publishing, or research.

PREFERRED:

Second Master's, EdD, or Ph.D. in a field relevant to higher education administration.

Working knowledge of cataloging and metadata schemas and standards, such as MARC21, RDA, AACR2. LCSH. EAD, MODS, Dublin Core, and emerging linked data standards

Demonstrated experience with assessment and data-informed decision-making.

Demonstrated experience with donor engagement, grants, foundation support, industry partnerships, and philanthropy

Demonstrated experience in publisher and vendor negotiations and consortia collaborations.

Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic plans and projects.

Demonstrated experience collaborating with campus partners and external stakeholders.

Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and coordinating efforts across library departments.

Experience working in a union environment.
