The research assistant 3 will work under limited supervision and in close cooperation with the principal investigator to carry out complex research assignments as part of the in vitro and in vivo testing of new antifungal agents and novel bioassays. The position will be primarily responsible for designing and performing antifungal testing in small animal models and coordinating the in vitro section of the mycology laboratory.
- Coordinate laboratory/ research activities. Perform minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) testing of new antifungal compounds. (25%)
- Work closely with the principal investigator. Assist in developing project proposals based on pharmaceutical sponsor's needs. Create a schedule for performance of multiple ongoing experiments. (10%)
- Carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature. Perform various other antifungal testing procedures such as agar diffusion assays, development of resistance, and time kill studies. (25%)
- Devise new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training. Develop models to test the activity of novel compounds (15%)
- Evaluate adequacy of techniques; study and test new procedures and analyzes data. Provide data and statistical analyses to sponsors. (10%)
- May supervise students and technicians. Train other staff members to perform antifungal testing procedures. (5%)
- May co-author research projects. Co-author research reports and manuscripts. (5%)
- May monitor the laboratory budget. Assist in iLab billing. (5%)
- Answer telephone inquiries from internal and external contacts. (3%)
- Perform other duties as assigned. (2%)
Department: Frequent (daily) interaction with the principal investigator; continuous contact with other research personnel within the department; and frequent contact with other staff within the department of Dermatology.
University: Frequent contact with the Animal Resource Center.
External: Occasional contact with professional associates from other institutions, as well as pharmaceutical representatives and vendors.
Students: Infrequent contact to help train work-study students in laboratory procedures.
May be responsible for the training and supervision of lower level technicians and students.
Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in laboratory and animal testing.
Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree.
- Has knowledge and understanding of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of medical mycology.
- Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment, including autoclave, sonication apparatus, centrifuge.
- Ability to meet consistent attendance.
- Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.
- Ability to perform in vitro and in vivo testing of antifungal drugs.
- Ability to conduct testing of antifungal agents in small animal models required.
- Knowledge and understanding of/Working knowledge of/demonstrated ability to perform antifungal susceptibility testing procedures preferred.
- Familiarity with policies and procedures of Center for Medical Mycology and Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) preferred.
- Professional and effective verbal and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work and communicate with various individuals within and external to the university.
- Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and proven ability to successfully follow-through on assigned projects.
- Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.
- Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to maintain familiarity and demonstrate knowledge of the Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine priorities, leadership and programs.

- Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced, changing environment, and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timeline.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, database applications, and with internet navigation.
- Must demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer programs as needed.
- Must demonstrate compliance with CWRU animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
Laboratory environment. The incumbent will work in a biological safety cabinet with personal protective equipment (lab coat and gloves) using sterile technique. Exposure to fungal pathogens is limited to those requiring a Biological Safety Cabinet Class II. Exposure to chemicals is minimal and is limited to ethyl alcohol, DMSO, and other non-hazardous solvents. Overtime and working on weekends may be occasionally required.
