The Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE) at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites applications for an Associate Dean of Student Success. Our vision for this position builds on existing and new initiatives within the College to build an inclusive learning community that is founded on justice, equity, and diversity and is supportive of every student's growth and success. As a member of the SCSE Dean's leadership team, this person will advise and support SCSE students and faculty in the development of programming for students. The successful candidate will join a vibrant group of faculty and staff working to integrate research and teaching, one that values integrative teaching and research, and a robust infrastructure for engaging students in cutting-edge research.
The Associate Dean position will focus primarily on development, implementation, and oversight of initiatives and programming that support student success in Swenson College. This position is critical for advancing the student-centered mission and programs in SCSE and cultivating an inclusive learning community for SCSE students. The position is a 12-month, 100% time appointment beginning as early as May 2023. The Associate Dean of Student Success serves as the primary supervisor of the Academic Advising Office and staff focused on student programming in the College (i.e., undergraduate research experiences, learning assistants, Living & Learning Communities, Peer Mentoring). The person will join a team of leaders including an Associate Dean of Faculty Success and department heads and directors. The Associate Dean will have specific areas of responsibility and focus and will report directly to the Dean.

Administration of academic programming (40%)
- Oversee the SCSE Academic Advising Office (Advising Director reports directly to this position).
- Investigate and adjudicate allegations of student misconduct and academic progress in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution, Academic Advising, and EOAA as appropriate.
- Coordinate student awards including research experiences and scholarships in collaboration with departments, advising office, and the scholarship coordinator.
- Coordinate with department heads and administrative assistants for annual faculty workload reporting.
- Collaborate with departments for course scheduling, program assessments and reviews, and curriculum development.
- Measure, assess, and disseminate effectiveness of student success programming in the College.
- Serve as the Dean's Office liaison for the College Curriculum Committee.
Student Programming (50%)
- Evaluate and disseminate student data to inform programming and practices to support student success.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing the college mission and strategic plan related to student success and programming.
- Develop and lead special projects to improve the student experience in SCSE (i.e., CUREs, Learning Assistants, PEER mentoring).
- Supervise staff working on undergraduate student programming.
- Establish and coordinate an SCSE student advisory group.
Dean's Office (10%)
- Act as the software coordinator for the College.
- Liaise, collaborate, and coordinate with the SCSE Associate Dean of Faculty Success and other collegiate associate deans.
- Serve as acting Dean in the Dean's absence for the purposes of signing authority and attendance at meetings to represent the Dean and the College.
- PhD in a STEM-related field represented within SCSE.
- Qualifications that would warrant appointment as tenured full professor in a SCSE department.
- Administrative experience (i.e., director, associate department head, department head, etc.).
- Demonstrated track record engaging, building, and maintaining an inclusive, just, diverse, and equitable learning community for students.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, flexibly, and productively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated experience leading a team or initiative.
- Experience evaluating and synthesizing data related to student recruitment, retention, and student success.
- Experience conducting, practicing, or disseminating Discipline-Based Educational Research in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders (students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators).
- Demonstrated ability for organizing and managing multiple commitments simultaneously.
