Princeton UniversitySea Level Variability and Predictability in Observations and High Resolution Climate Models

Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior researcher to conduct research on the variability and predictability of sea level and associated climate quantities in observations and high-resolution coupled climate models. The objective of this project is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms and predictability of sea level variations and dynamically linked quantities on seasonal to interannual time scales, including the role of remote forcing and teleconnections.

The selected candidate will analyze data from observations and climate model simulations with different resolutions, including high-resolution versions of the GFDL SPEAR model. Possible future changes in sea level variability and predictability may also be explored using high-resolution large ensemble simulations from SPEAR models under various emission scenarios. The selected candidate will be encouraged to use novel diagnostic techniques and new physical insights to explore these topics.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or a closely related field. Candidates should have strong backgrounds in one or more of the following: climate dynamics, climate predictability, climate variability and change, and analysis of large observational and model datasets, including the use of advanced statistical analyses such as machine learning. The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
