Overview:
The Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health combines expertise in basic and applied infectious disease research, public health, wildlife medicine and conservation. The alignment of these areas promotes cross-disciplinary research that is important to the mission of the Department to improve human, animal and ecosystem health.

What You'll Do:
As emphasized in the 2018-2022 American College of Veterinary Pathologists Strategic Plan, veterinary anatomic pathologists continue to explore and adopt technologies, such as digital pathology, image analysis, machine learning and spatial omics to improve data extraction from images used in research and diagnostic settings. This position is open to board-certified veterinary pathologists and board-eligible trainees, who have a strong interest in learning to use and apply digital pathology to animal models of human disease. The candidate will:Use existing computer-aided image processing, analysis, deep learning and artificial intelligence modalities actively applied in medical applications, biomedical research and drug safety to investigate pathogenesis related questions for infectious disease research, including:COVID-19 and/or tuberculosisOncology Toxicologic pathology, and translational medicine. The goals of this position are to:Create and use digital pathology tools to understand disease pathogenesis Extract and quantify image features for quantitative analyses and predictive modellingGain an understanding of how machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence apply to modern pathology and biomedical research images; and Develop critical thinking, scientific communication, grant-writing skills, and an understanding of the drug development process. To our knowledge, this is the first position to actively recruit and support pathologist fellows to train under veterinary pathologists and computer scientists, who are currently developing and using deep learning and artificial intelligence to investigate animal models of human diseases. This is a one year, 100% research position (no diagnostic service), with the potential for extension. The candidate will: Develop a research project in the Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource (CPGSR) at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and/or Takeda Pharmaceutical Company that will be supervised by Amanda Martinot, DVM, PhD, DACVP (Anatomic; Tufts) and Krista La Perle, DVM, PhD, DACVP (anatomic; Takeda). Takeda is a global, R&D-driven, biopharmaceutical leader committed to development of life-changing treatment for patients. The selected candidate will spend 6 months on the North Grafton campus at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and 6 months at the Takeda Boston campus in Cambridge, MA. At Cummings School, the candidate will be involved in developing and evaluating animal models of human disease for both internal and external users of the CPGSR using digital pathology (up to 50%). At Takeda, the candidate will assist toxicologic pathologists, imaging specialists and bioinformaticians to learn how to develop and utilize complex image platforms to build algorithms, analyze multiplex image platforms, and integrate spatial transcriptomics for drug safety assessments, vaccine testing, and therapeutic development (50%).

What We're Looking For:
Basic Reqirements:Years of related experience required: Completed or matriculated in veterinary anatomic residency program (at least 2nd year)Required education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)Required computer/technical skills: Microsoft Office, particularly ExcelPreferred Qualifications: Interest in comparative pathology, animal models of infectious diseases, oncology, and toxicologic pathology.
