Primary Duties
Reporting to the Chief Medical and Product Strategy Officer, the Head of Product Strategy is responsible for: product and portfolio stewardship as well as our Program, Portfolio and Alliance Management function. This includes leadership of cross-functional asset teams to develop new drugs and indications, including strategy development, commercial assessment, operational execution, strategic analytics, pricing and market access, and public affairs.
This role will partner closely with leaders across the company in all functional areas including Patient Supply, Commercial, Research and Technology and Development. The Head of Product Strategy will be responsible for the scientific assessment, and competitive analysis of early and late-stage products as well as validated innovative technology opportunities necessary to support growth and strength in Spark’s portfolio.
The qualified candidate will work across the company internally as well as support discussions on product development activities and opportunities. In this position the candidate will be part of an energizing and supportive biotech culture engaged in continuous development and improvement. A strong operating executive, s/he will oversee current and new activities from end to end. This individual must be a forward-thinker who is extremely focused and capable of creating an evolving strategy to meet and anticipate both near and long-term opportunities and who is a subject matter expert in the Pharmaceutical/GT space.

Responsibilities
  • Lead or leverage cross functional asset team leaders (Asset General Managers) to evaluate, develop and manage pipeline projects for new product development and ongoing lifecycle management of products, processes, and therapies
  • Develop and oversee the execution of an aggressive product opportunity assessment and development strategy/pipeline to result in top-line revenue growth and increased market share
  • As a core member of the Portfolio Governance Committee (PGC), ensure alignment of product and portfolio strategy and execution
  • Build a long-term view of emerging technologies and ensure pull-through of corporate/disease area strategy that properly balances individual program risk with meaningful progression of emerging technologies
  • Ensure consistent application and implementation of the operating model by the Asset Teams.
  • Identify, prioritize, structure, and manage complex portfolio-wide challenges. Collaborate with PGC members as well as other functional/divisional leaders to provide definition and resolution to these challenges.
  • Serve as key interface with BDC/CPC to ensure alignmentof inorganic product growth and platform capabilities with product strategy
  • Assess project issues and develop resolutions to meet scientific, clinical, quality, and business goals and objectives
  • Through the team, ensure excellent program management across the Spark portfolio
  • Design and implement the needed strategy and implementation of all project management associated tools, templates, systems, and resourcing planning.
  • Develop mechanisms for monitoring project progress and for intervention and problem solving.
  • Research, monitor, and communicate market conditions and scientific/technological developments. The position will require strong scientific/ clinical and analytical competencies to provide creative solutions and insight on a wide range of challenging quantitative projects.
  • Evaluate and escalate major opportunities, changes in project outputs or timetables, and competitive market impacts to the executive level
  • Communicates with stakeholders, obtains stakeholder engagement to ensure the end products or processes will solve the business problems
  • Communicates and conducts briefings with executive leadership regarding ongoing operations and strategic initiatives
  • Conduct and refine scientific and market assessments to support existing and proposed projects
  • Incorporate insights from scientific experts (internal R&D colleagues and external opinion leaders) to formulate actionable strategies
  • Become a valuable contributor and leader for new initiatives as they arise
  • Help to drive and support an engaging and inspiring culture
  • Ensures strict adherence to compliance guidelines

Education and Experience Requirements
  • 15+ years of experience in biotech/pharma strategic roles with a track record of accomplishment in asset development
  • BS/BAdegree required. Advanced degree preferred (MS,MBA, PhD)
  • C-Suite aptitude preferred
  • Proven and recognized data-driven thought leader with a track record of creating and implementing product and/or portfolio vision and strategy across and within a rapidly scaling organization
  • Passionate about providing exceptional products and services to patients; has demonstrated experience injecting voice of patients into product development process.
  • Self-motivated team player with the ability to proactively identify and prioritize problems and opportunities, maintain focus on big picture, and design effective solutions and action plans
  • Strong ability to multi-task and work toward fixed deadlines in a fast pace and demanding environment
  • Clear qualitative and quantitative analytical, communication, and project management skills
  • Robust leadership abilities to influence and lead in a matrix and remote organization
  • Ability to collaborate in a multidisciplinary and dynamic environment and experience in partnering with scientific teams
  • Highest standards of personal and professional integrity and ethics
  • Excellent clinical, financial, and analytical skills and acumen
  • Experience in one or more functional roles preferred (e.g., Clinical Development, Commercial, Regulatory, Manufacturing/CMC, etc.)
