Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's ( LBNL ) ESIE Electronics Systems Group in the Engineering Division has an opening for an Electronics Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will support the Advanced Light Source ( ALS ), National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM), and our partner scientific divisions in developing electronics readout systems for leading edge experiments and scientific research. You will focus on electronics designs for a variety of different types of detectors and data acquisition readout systems. Assignments will range from electronics circuit simulation, design, layout and fabrication, circuit debugging, test stand development for data acquisition systems for scientific applications.

What You Will Do:
  • Design and simulate electronic circuits and printed circuit boards for sensor data acquisition (DAQ) systems, including those that incorporate custom ASICs developed by the IC group at LBL.
  • Develop test stands, test, debug and validate circuit designs for DAQ systems and custom ASICs.
  • Document ongoing and completed work and present it at conferences and workshops as opportunities arise.
  • Interact with a broad range of engineers, scientists, students, post-docs, technicians, and administrative staff.
  • Work collaboratively with scientists and engineers both from LBNL and from other institutions to implement recommendations, requirements, and specifications, and implement solutions.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Design and implement FPGA-based systems through modeling, firmware development, and testing in support of the many activities in the division and at the laboratory.
  • Supervise and provide daily guidance to students and interns.
  • Support engineering associates and technicians; provide feedback on their work to assure that task completion is timely and of quality.
  • Support the preparation of new proposals, from the development of technical concepts to the preparation of budgets and schedules.

What is Required:
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Direct experience in circuit design, schematic capture and printed circuit board layout design.
  • Direct experience in modeling and design of electronic circuits for DAQ systems and custom ASIC tests, including implementation and optimization in scientific applications.
  • Knowledge and experience related to the design of scientific instrumentation, data acquisition systems, and computer control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively develop and implement solutions to a variety of technical problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions, solve unique problems, and interact effectively within a diverse team.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills sufficient to document, present, and summarize results of research and development activities.
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD tools for schematic capture and printed circuit board design, such as PADS, OrCAD, KiCad, etc.
  • Sound judgment and knowledge of current principles and practices in mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing engineering.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working in a research and development environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with simulations and programming of FPGAs in hardware design language such as Verilog and/or VHDL.

Notes:
  • This is a full time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
