What You Will Achieve

We are seeking a creative, highly motivated synthetic organic chemist to join our Pfizer Worldwide Research, Development and Medical laboratories based in Groton, CT. As part of the Applied Synthesis and Technology group within Medicine Design, the successful applicant will employ synthetic technologies, in particular continuous flow chemistry, to drive the advancement of programs across the small molecule portfolio. The successful applicant will work directly with medicinal chemistry project teams to deliver future pharmaceutical therapies. In addition to applying continuous flow chemistry, they will utilize a range of synthesis technologies which may include high-throughput experimentation, laboratory automation, parallel medicinal chemistry and/or biocatalysis.

How You Will Achieve It

Primarily, the successful applicant will identify opportunities for the application of continuous flow chemistry within Pfizer's early-stage pharmaceutical development programs and develop flow chemistry processes to advance the medicinal chemistry portfolio. In addition, their responsibilities will include:
  • Independent use of established and modern synthetic methodologies and technologies to drive projects.
  • Chemical synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates to support medicinal chemistry programs
  • Working with internal and external partners to deliver continuous flow and other technology-based chemical syntheses
  • Utilization of state-of-the-art high-throughput experimentation (HTE) and analytical platforms to conduct research.
  • Development of new continuous flow chemistry-based technologies.
  • Contributing to and maintaining a comprehensive knowledge of organic chemistry and synthesis technology literature.
  • As a strong team player, working with partner lines to deliver on project goals via collaboration and clear communication.


Qualifications

Must-Have

  • A PhD in a synthetic or a continuous flow chemistry related subject with 0-3 years of industrial experience or a BSc/MSc in a synthetic or a continuous flow-related subject with over 6 years of industrial experience is required.
  • Expert understanding of and significant laboratory experience conducting continuous flow chemistry is required.
  • An excellent track record of developing and executing chemical processes as well as contributions to the scientific literature are essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of established and modern chemical synthesis methodologies is required.
  • Strong analytical and chemical problem-solving skills are required.


Nice-to-Have

  • Contributions to the continuous flow chemistry literature are desirable
  • Post-doctoral experience is desirable.
  • Knowledge of high-throughput experimentation, automation, synthesis technologies and/or modern analytical chemistry is an advantage.
  • Makes good decisions in a timely manner, sometimes under tight deadlines.
  • Capable of quickly adapting to changes in project direction.
  • Responds well to scientific challenges and applies significant rigor to own work.
  • Steadfastly pushes oneself to achieve results and deliver on goals.
  • Is seen as a team player and encourages collaboration.


PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to design and execute chemical reactions in a laboratory environment.

Ability to perform mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.

NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Occasional and limited travel (0-5%) to support technology transfer or attend conferences/business meetings.
