The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 3 (LSRP3) to perform complex functions and activities in defined research projects, and independently conduct a major portion of the research project as a member for the Yang Lab. Dr. Yang's research group focuses on understanding the mechanisms responsible for viral replication and development of new strategies to combat viral pathogens. We combine chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, and molecular virology approaches to tackle challenges in both basic and translational research. Over the past decade, our efforts have centered on two significant problems: first, addressing the challenges that limit our current arsenal of antivirals and second, understanding the specificity and function of host lipids in RNA virus replication. We are keenly interested in discovery of new antiviral targets and strategies and leveraging these discoveries to develop first-in-class small molecule antivirals. We also have a strong interest in developing or adapting tools from chemistry, chemical engineering, and biophysics to probe new areas of virology.

The LSRP will design and perform experiments to develop and characterize novel small molecule antivirals. This includes expression of recombinant proteins, characterization of protein-small molecule interactions, target identification experiments, and hypothesis-driven studies to establish mechanism of action. The LSRP will serve as the protein biochemist working on a team with medicinal chemists, computational chemists, protein mass spectrometrists, and virologists. The desire and ability to collaborate are essential.
Candidates must have prior experience with 1) recombinant protein expression using baculovirus expression systems; 2) measurement of protein-small molecule binding by BLI, SPR, MST, and/or ITC. Familiarity with DLS, SEC-MALS, and protein crystallography desired.

Duties include:
  • Design research approaches for a major portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem-solving, and writing up for publication.
  • Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches.
  • Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
  • Assist with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May be a co-author on publications. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
  • Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

* - Other duties may also be assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in biochemistry or biophysics or related life science field is preferred.
  • Significant experience with:
  1. Recombinant protein expression in bacterial, insect, and mammalian cells.
  2. Kinetic and thermodynamic characterization of molecular interactions.
  3. Proficiency with molecular cloning strategies and techniques.
  4. Proficiency with standard protein biochemistry techniques .
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated professionalism in working with colleagues (both internal and external laboratory users).
  • Candidate will need to demonstrate aptitudes in foresight, planning and ability to organize.
  • Familiarity with and willingness to try new techniques is important.

  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Developing project management skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
