The Department of Mathematics at Oregon State Universityinvites applications for a Department Head, with an accompanyingappointment as tenured Professor. The incumbent will hold twoappointments, a 0.75 FTE professional faculty position and a 0.25FTE tenured Professor position, reflecting job duties in both theadministrative and academic arenas during the academicyear.

In addition, the leadership responsibilities of the Department Headposition continue during the summer months and these are accountedfor through a separate summer appointment. The Head reports to theDean of the College of Science. The Head is an integral part of theCollege Leadership Team (CLT) working closely with the Dean toadvance the mission of the College, develop strategy andparticipate in decisions impacting the finances and budget of thedepartment.

The Department of Mathematics is one of seven units in the Collegeof Science at Oregon State University. Mathematics is aresearch-active department committed to providing equitable accessto quality learning and career development at all levels, devotedto creating and promoting knowledge in mathematics and preparingall students with mathematical literacy to succeed in today'sworld. The department has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 28Instructors. The department is engaged in interdisciplinary andfundamental research in theoretical and applied mathematics.Current research areas include actuarial science and financialmathematics, algebra and number theory, analysis, computational andapplied mathematics, geometry, mathematics education, numericalanalysis, partial differential equations, probability, topology,and mathematical biology.

The department enrolls approximately 253 majors and offers a BSdegree in mathematics with four different options in applied andcomputational mathematics, mathematical biology, statistics andsecondary teaching emphasis. The department offers a minor inmathematics and in actuarial science. The graduate program leads tothe MA, MS, and PhD degrees in mathematics and includesapproximately 58 graduate students. The mathematics departmentoffers a variety of lower division undergraduate courses throughour Ecampus, ranging from elementary algebra to probability andvector calculus.

The Department Head is responsible for the management andleadership of the department's teaching, research, and outreach andservice functions. The Head is expected to provide effectiveacademic leadership, strategic vision and to remain active inteaching and research. The Department Head will integrate, advocateand advance equity & inclusive excellence within all aspects oftheir work in the College of Science. They will continuously refinethe department's mission, vision and values to align with theCollege of Science and Oregon State University.

The Head will collaborate with the mathematics faculty and staff inleading the development and implementation of the strategic anddiversity plans of the department and in connecting strategy toresources and budget to maintain and improve the fiscal health ofthe department. The Head will provide leadership for faculty in thedevelopment of policies and programs to improve student recruitment& success and address opportunity gaps for Pell-eligible, FirstGeneration students, Students of Color, students from low incomebackgrounds and students from other underrepresented communities inSTEM. Specific duties are to oversee budgetary, hiring and salarydecisions, communicate vision and mission of the department to thecollege and university, set policy for the department, authorizeproposal submissions for department mission, oversee completion ofregular reporting required by the college and university, enhancediversity, foster collaborations across departments and colleges;engage community stakeholders as appropriate (e.g. engaging withalumni), and help with fundraising for the department, college anduniversity.

The College of Science has seven departments across themathematical, physical and biological sciences: Biochemistry andBiophysics, Chemistry, Integrative Biology, Mathematics,Microbiology, Physics and Statistics.
