The Biological Sciences (BioSci) Program is seeking two fixed-term faculty members to join the BioSci Program teaching team. The successful candidates will join a diverse group of educators and discipline-based education researchers dedicated to providing high-quality undergraduate biology education. The initial appointment will be for one year (9 months) with expectation of continuing renewal based on satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate for the first position will serve as curriculum coordinator and instructor for BS172, a large enrollment introductory organismal biology lab course designed for life-science majors. The coordinator will lead BS172 instructors in continuing improvement of a laboratory curriculum that guides diverse student groups through inquiry-based research projects; train, supervise, and evaluate graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate learning assistants; work with prep staff to ensure smooth lab implementation; and teach recitations and serve as an instructor in the course. The successful candidate for the second position will serve as an instructor for introductory biology lecture and lab courses designed to actively engage life-science majors in three-dimensional learning and will work with teams of faculty to develop curriculum for these courses. Depending on the needs of the program, the candidate may teach in cellular and molecular or organismal biology courses, work with diverse student groups to support their learning across their introductory biology courses, and may assist the lab curriculum coordinator of those courses.

Qualifications: An advanced degree in the biological sciences or related fields with college teaching experience (as a teaching assistant or instructor of record) or experience mentoring students through research projects is required. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to creating inclusive learning environments and professional development. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with teams of instructors, curriculum development (particularly three-dimensional curricula and assessments), supervising graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate learning assistants, teaching in undergraduate laboratories that include research projects, and teaching that supports diverse learners.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, and two examples of how you have implemented or plan to implement your teaching philosophy, highlighting experience with and/or commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (please limit your teaching philosophy description to four pages). All documents should be submitted to https://careers.msu.edu (curriculum coordinator job# 847550; instructor job# 848264). The applicant should also provide the contact information for three professional references; references will be contacted during the screening process. Review of applications will begin on March 20 and will continue until the position is filled. Questions regarding the position may be directed to Dr. Katie Krueger, BioSci Program Assistant Director and Chair of the Search Committee (krueg172@msu.edu).
